Permalink What was the first LP that was considered Surf Music?

I ask because recently I scored a copy of Surfer's Choice by Dale.
Is it considered the first full length surf album? Or were there others preceding it's release.

Not positive on this, but I kinda recall it being "Surfbeat" by the Challengers.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Surfbeat was 1963, Surfer's Choice was 1962

Insect Surfers
The Tikiyaki Orchestra
The Scimitars
Lords Of Atlantis
Fiberglass Jungle - Surf Radio

To me, the LP back then does not hold the same importance as a record made these days would.

There are landmark recordings in surf music, but not really any landmark LPs. The LPs tend to be thrown together, somewhat inconsistent, have a mix of originals/covers and have a mix of instro and vocal tunes.

To me, the singles are the important releases. Let's Go Trippin', Mr. Moto being the first released by influenced by Let's Go Trippin'. Let's go Trippin' is considered the 'first' surf song, but Mr. Moto would be the first surf song released. Independently, they appear to have each been deemed surf music.

Do we know when Surfer's Choice was released, the month that is?

The first Surf LP, Surfer's Choice, yes I think you're correct.

According to Discogs November of 62'. I'm seeing slot of sites stating Surf beat as being released in 63' JonPaul is right.

I agree about the LPs but Mr Moto and Let's Go Trippin' Were 1961. Moon Dawg by the Gamblers was 1960

Beach Boys were October '62... while not instro surf... most of us consider them a 'surf band'.

And Walk Don't Run was 1960, Rebel Rouser was 1958. Moon Dawg doesn't have much in common with Mr. Moto or Let's Go Trippin'. Moon Dawg is very much a rock and roll instrumental.

We may have another contender for earliest Surf LP. I knew the Marketts could lay claim the first surf-themed instrumental with 1961's "Surfer's Stomp". What I just realized is that this was the title track to the album of the same name. Liberty Records, 1961.

Correction....1962. Can't find what month.

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Thanks, Brian. I have read that article, though I didn't recall that John gives the date for Surfer's Choice as 1961. It's hard to argue with the man who wrote the "book", but I've only ever seen the release year listed elsewhere as 1962. I don't see a release date on my copy.

He only says Let's Go Trippin' from 1961, Surfer's Choice isn't listed.

Ah, that's right. I'm wanting to conflate LP and singles in this thread.

On the subject of singles, "Bustin' Surfboards" by the Tornadoes released in '62 must be one of the first unabashedly "surf" records combining title and sound/imagery (the crashing of waves). It says; "this instrumental about surfing", something that might not have been readily apparent on earlier singles mentioned. I think I remember PJ saying that they didn't write Mr. Moto as a surf song, though it came to be associated with that.

"Surfbeat" by the Challengers would have been the first all instrumental surf LP, si o no?

Aha!
That's it,
I knew I was remembering something being important about that LP.
Thanks Ted.

Good information to know, Ted (and thanks for that also, Louie7). That detail represents a sort of landmark, as other all-instro albums..i.e. Soul Surfin' and Surf Rider soon followed.
