Interesting. I'm not sure I believe all the connections as such. In the South Asian link (see the time line), I think I might prefer the Panthers. But a lot of this material just sounds like "bright splashy exotic instrumental music," without somehow being surf. It might fit as well in a discussion of ska, as one commenter on a Panthers track suggests. Some of the connections suggested in the article remind me a bit of the tendency of modern reviewers to pervert the meaning of surf to be "light, melodious pop." One reason Pandora veers off track is that it has no parameter "instrumental." It's like trying to steer when you don't understand the concept "road." Last edited: Jul 23, 2014 20:06:43 |

I listen to Pandora while working in the garage because it loads on my crappy AT&T 'dsl' (dirt slow line) better than RadioTuna that conveys the far superior NSSR webcast. I can get Pandora to play a fair selection of surf & instro, by indicating specific band names. Check out Panthers' "Malkaus". The vocal intro demonstrates the raga that the instro approximates (you could say mangles). When I was in Varanasi, North India studying shahnai, this raga was played a lot. I guess it's seasonal to January-April. Supposed to sound scary, actually. — |

I can see a Johnny and the Hurricanes inspiration in the Fore Thoughts song, but I agree that the rest seems to have more raga influence than any overt surf influence — |

I agree with you Tuck. It is not very surfy (more instro rock), but still cool to my ears. I think there is a strong Western R&R influence mixed in with some Pakistani folk music influence. The article is pretty general, and maybe not as informed as we think it could be. The Pakistani instro rock connection is new to me, and I do have the article to thank for that. Rev —Canadian Surf |
