Permalink 'siboney' chords......help, i'm stuck

New Topic

so.....i volunteered to play rhythm on 'siboney' in the members jam and am stuck on the chords.

Am Dm Am Dm Am E Am 2X

and then E and then i'm lost

anyone here play the rhythm on this?

www.surfintheeye.com

Is this the Johnny Fortune version? It's the only thing I found on YouTube that makes sense in this context. Listening to it now...

After the part you lay out, I then hear: E F E F E E F F E E F F E
The site messes with the spacing I typed here...the first four E-F are quick, then settle down to E for a measure, F for a measure (then a walk down that seems mostly on the bass: E D C B (and it may actually be an E chord played over that part after the C).

That little flourish/stab before the sax solo (:53): Am Dm C E (2x)

At the section that begins at 1:43 (with the Spanish sounding guitar licks), it's just holds an A for a few measures, then to E

The little tag at the end (2:10): F G F E D Am (again, I'm hearing those notes mostly in the bass, but you can work the chords around it).

This is what I used: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVurISkI-GM

I do apologize...I can't write out tabs, but I know everyone plays well enough to hear the changes. I don't know how to notate the "when" of it all in writing. Others here can probably say/notate it better.

Neat song. I've never heard it until just now, but I've added it to my list (TGFYT). I only knew his "Soul Surfer" before...

It reminds me of "Pintor" a bit...Am, with a little bridge-y section where it goes from E to F for a bit.

Siboney was written by Lecuona, who also wrote Malaguena. The recording of Lecuona performing Siboney on the piano sounds quite different from the half dozen different recordings of surf guitar versions I've heard. I suggest you hear Lecuona before you perform it.

Here is a link to Lecuona's performance:

Is it the Johnny Fortune version called Siboney or the Johnny Fortune version called Lone Surfer? Big Grin

The Hellbenders and the Bambis do decent versions, too.

Any way, a beautiful song.

Who's doing the trumpet? I wonder if Al Garcia is available.

These might help some. Not a surf version, of course.

This is kind of wild:

I wish I could write this stuff out better, to be more help to the OP. I can hear it, I can play it, etc.

thanks. you've been a big help. i can figure out the spacing, the chords are more important to me.

You're welcome.

In my book the best version of Siboney is still the one by Los Twang! Marvels. Maybe you can catch some of the chord changes directly from Yolandas playing?

Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin)
"Postcards from the Scrapyard" Vol. 1, 2 & 3 NOW available on various platforms!
"Chaos at the Lobster Lounge" available as LP and download on Surf Cookie Records!

The middle 8 is in A Major, not minor.

The vocal version featuring Xiomara Alfaro, and the Los Twang! Marvels', is in c minor. It's a simple tune, like most old Cuban tunes, with a very suave melody. Been working on the Johnny Fortune Version this week myself. Check out piano versions too!

Is that the Spanish-y guitar sounding part? It does change, doesn't it? I could hear it, but I didn't think to make it major. It was different, but I didn't think harder on it. I'll edit my original post to reflect this. Thanks!

Is the rest of my (rough) layout pretty okay? The E-F stuff, and the little walk-downs?

I love the song. Been listening to it a good bit the past 24 hours.

The final chord is nice too.

Fear to go out of the surf context but for me (ex Flamenco player) the best Siboney version is played by Paco De Lucia Wink

IMO he sounds like a one-man surf band. Just a little remastering is needed for traditional tones.

Yes, it's all major chords in the middle 8 – key changes abruptly between parallel minor and Major, then back again. Johnny Fortune finishes with an a-6 chord after a harmonized downward run in a harmonic minor (easy to play on 1+3, 2+4 strings).

Isn't Siboney the tune played by the elegant Spanish dude in Fellini's "Giulieta degli Spiriti", in the scene in the garden where he explains the mystery of Sangria to Giulieta?
