No way to avoid expectations, preferences. But once a guitar is in my hands, I'm trying to see, feel and hear it for what it is. Not what I think it should be, or what I need.
Not easy to do. Luckily, I'm not much burdened by brand fixation, and my curiosity about guitars is great. So there's a strange mix of guitars in my house. I'm just as likely to pick up my cheapest guitar (MIK casino) as an old ES-335 or partscaster tele. They all have different qualities, and it has not all that much to do with money.

Hey guy, I can identify with ya. It took me 50 years to finally acquire an ES-355. I wanted one from the first time I wandered to Rhythm City Music and gawked at all those cherry red Gibson's hanging all over the place.
The more I play it the better it gets.
Life is short, find a good guitar.
