Hey guys, Couldn't find an introduction sort of place so thought I'd do that here. Im Nick, live on the south coast of Australia and I have been enjoying the surf/surfmusic lifestyle my whole life. A year or so ago I started learning guitar and all my favourite Jack johnson, Mat mchugh and heaps of other bands songs. I have a youtube where I upload these covers so check em out and hopefully you like them ! I also have a few originals on the go that have the surfy style to them so hopefully you hear them soon !

Cheers guys, heres the link. https://www.youtube.com/user/nickksimo

Check out my Youtube where I upload covers of Jack Johnson, Mat Mchugh & The Beautiful Girls and more !

Welcome!

I am very amused…

Maybe you use a bit more reverb on your guitar?

Nick, this site is especially for Surf Music, yes.
But Surf Music is something different…

Maybe you take a bit time and click for example to the link to the North Sea Surf Radio and listen to the Surf Music there for half an hour. Then you know what Surf Music is:
http://www.northseasurfradio.com

Let us know what you think about this instrumental Surf music!!!

I know music like Jack Johnson is called Surf Music nowadays also…
So there are two kinds of Surf Music. Enjoy both!

best cheers!

Twang cheers!

Hi Nick,

Ralf is right. The music that you think of as surf music is different from what we here at Surfguitar101 think of as surf music. Back when the sport of surfing was really taking of in Southern California, there was also a new batch of bands playing guitar based instrumental songs. The surfers at that time decided to adopt that style of music for their own and called it surf music.

It's easy to get confused, as there are several distinct types of surf music, including the Jack Johnson style you favor, and no real authority to choose one as the definitive one. It's just as valid to call the Beach Boys surf music, and most people in this country do, but we here at SG101 prefer our surf music instrumental.

I hope you check out North Sea Surf radio, or even our own SG101 podcasts and give the music a try. You may find you like it. And there's no reason why you couldn't play both types ;)

Hi Nick! Welcome to sg101. Glad you're here. To the above I'd add, check out Martin Cilia, The Atlantics and other Australian surf bands. There are more than a few. And, congratulations on picking up the guitar. You never know where that can lead.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Welcome, Nick! You could always follow the example of The Ventures, and claim to not play surf music, just instrumental. Never mind that The Ventures had a few hits, with what are considered to be surf instrumentals, and were a major influence on surf bands and the surf sound.
