Sorry mr Dale... I have heard it in Gypsy Jazz, done by Django.... sounds like one-note-one-pick when he did it.

I wouldn't exactly describe Los Fantasticos as classically surf, but we're working on a tune right now that features e-bow. — |

And sometimes pretty low, too. The Chuck Berry article is an example of the latter, at points. But, seriously, one of y'all should just go in there and edit the definition of glissando to include the teke teke teke "staccato run" thing. The main qualification for being a Wikipedia editor is having an Internet connection. Last edited: Apr 07, 2007 18:42:28 |

Not to suggest that you intended down in any specific directional sense, Brukout, but I'm pretty sure I've heard down, up, and both directions (alternately). Incidentally, the would be Wiki-ed(s), should check around while they're there. There are a lot of weaknesses in Wikipedia vis-a-vis surf music. Check out the reverberation article. Look in vain for double picking. Look (also in vain) under tank (disambiguation). Last edited: Apr 07, 2007 18:47:08 |

Beats my counter example. I was going to say Bo Diddley. I think it's on the bass in Bo Diddley. The effect is not quite the same. I think the bass in early Bo Diddley is Willie Dixon on the upright. I'm pretty sure I've heard Bo do it on the lead, too, but I may be remembering something in a cover. The longer glissandos in Road Runner sound like scraping with the pick to me. |

I've got a follow-up "what's it called" question: What's the term for when a guitarist double picks on one string, intermittently hammering on notes and then playing the open string really fast? Off the top of my head, I know it's been done in the Madeira's "Ricochet" and is probably most pronounced in Slacktone's versions of Miserlou. Does that even have a name? |

If you say Teke Teke Teke really fast it actually kinda sounds like it. —<img src="klzzwxh:0000"></img> |

I was thinking glissandos (or, "Dick Dales") sounded like that: TEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKE. . . What I'm talking about sounds more like this: TEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKETEKE. . . I'm sure I've made myself perfectly clear. |

Yep. You essentially leave out the vowels or reduce them to the one in just of "just a minute." It's something about the human vocal tract or ear. Notice everyone who goes with the sound comes up with something like that: teke teke teke (Japanese) It's the same sort of phenomenon that leads people to hear consonants and vowels in bird song. I have a nice explanation of teke teke ... in terms of acoustic phonetics, but let's give that one a miss! As far as the thing Wooza is referring to, and I recognized it as soon as I heard the description - thinking "like Wronski in Miserlou" as I was reading his examples - well, no idea what you call it. I'm pretty sure I've heard other people do it. How about the start of the Honkeys' Good/Evil on War of the Surf Guitars? No idea what you call it. I bet it's as old as guitars or older. |

Since the open note stays constant, wouldn't it be considered pedal point? -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

I've heard the terms "pedal point", "pedaling" as well as "drone". Townsend does that a lot too. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

I bet that doesn't have a name, but we could come up with one. Let's start a thread on that. —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |
