Today, while rifling thru some old manilla envelopes, I found this old song list from my FIRST (surf) band, The Novas.
Yer lookin' at probably spring or summer 1965

heck ya...
and a great story to go along with it.....
In 1994, I drove to Tacoma to interview Rich Dangel...
I asked him what the word MASHI meant and he told me that it means
TO MOVE - - - or somthing like that....

Wow...."Carl's Big Chance" i ALWAYS loved that tune....yeah it's just a simple little Chuck Berry vamp but just the title brought back a lot of memories from back then. Now i wanna go see if i can find it on CD. Do you think that was really Carl playing? I hope so. Thanks for sharing that set list.

yeah... I think it was CARL.
He was pretty darn good for a kid they called PORKY.
He certainly did NOT play Miserlou. That's clearly the work of a seasoned studio cat. Probably Al Ciola or Billy Mure or Peter Frampton (j/kidding).

That is a sweet set list. I would not mind seeing that played at a gig this weekend.

Kyle ~ you're very kind....I appreciate that. I'm an old geezer...but not as old as Wilson, Bogle and that other guy. hehe I'm even younger than Tony Andreason!
I've been in two or three surf bands.
My first and beloved Novas and then The Neurotics and then The ExRays (a trio..guitar, bass and drums).
But I'm not really IN a surf band currently (altho I probably SHOULD be).
I operate a Telecaster and Stratocaster in a traditional C&W band. We do all the good stuff....by Merle Haggard, George Jones and Buck Owens!
Altho certainly not a Surf Band by any stretch, there are simUlarities; like, Fender guitars and amps played loud and clean! I use as much ((((reverb)))) as the law will allow.
I have insisted on 'my' fair share of instrumentals...so we always play the following songs:
Buckaroo - The Happy-Go-Lucky Guitar - Honky Tonk - Ghost Riders in The Sky ~ ~ ~ and the occasional Pipeline and Sleepwalk.
So I'm relatively happy. I get to use my gear any way I see fit. And I get paid, and usually get free beer.
But my first love is Surf Music and instrumentals. I'm always skitzin' the other guys out during sound-check when I break into chorus of "The Lonely Surfer" or peal off a few measures of "Hot Doggin" or "Tube City"..
They don't 'get it'....the infidels. HAHAHAHAHAHA

I notice that "Hall Of The Mountain King" is erased. How come? I'd love to hear a surf version of that song.

Louie, this wouldn't by chance be the Novas of "The Crusher" fame?

golly...... so many kwestions....
and before I get started... I should mention that two songs -'Stoked' & 'Surf Jam' are not listed on there for some reason. Which is weird, cause I KNOW those were like our best and most favorite numbers....we ALWAYS played them.
Nope...not THAT Novas... just a local teen combo.
'Fever' was, if I remember correctly, an instrumental reading of the PR&R version, er sompthin.....I vaguely recall getting very excited when The McCoys (of Sloopy fame) waxed and released a vocal version that had a way outta-sight guitar based arrangement.
'Hall of the Mt. Kings' isn't erased. It's written in pencil. I can't say whether or not that would have been a surf version - it was pretty much based primarily on the recording by Sounds Incorporated. That song didn't get performed too often...owing to the fact that we had a couple changes of rhythm guitar player about the time that we learned it; and it's not exactly a simple 3 chord thing. Of course that didn't discourage 15 year old me! I just blazed ahead with it. As I recall, around that time we also took a stab at 'Slaughter On 10th Avenue'....but I don't think that one came together enough to try it live.
Kyle - we have a web-site, but it's too embarrassingly lame to even link to.
First of all, it's hopelessly out of date. It has pictures of the band way before I joined up..and the other pages are backward and out of date too.
It would probably be better if I saw YOUR band - which I've actually been trying to do....(but I'm married with children..so it takes some creative effort to do things like that)....but I'll show up at one of your RED ROOM gigs sometime. I'd come on April 20, but I'm booked that weekend. I just HAVE to hear 'Saturday Night on Mars' live in person, if it's the last thing I do. Thanks for the comment on my Stratocaster. It's not a 60's piece, but it does the job. I have it totally dialed in. It's about as playable as a 70's Strat can be. I just wish is wasn't quite so heavy. I think you'd like playing it....the wobble-bar is perfectly setup and the pickups actually sound quite nice! I'm looking forward to our next gig, since I got my Pro Reverb recapped and some 'better' tubes in my 'TANK'. The venue is large, so I can really open it up and see how she sounds!

we're working on a new CD, hoping to release this summer, and that'll be on it. As soon as we have a decent demo version though, I'll send it to you. Maybe in a month or so.
