Permalink Lollar Strat pickups: any good for surf ?

New Topic

Well, I can tell you now that the Blackfaces definitely surf! I've had them in my Strat since last Thursday and I'm a very happy camper Smile I played them through my Blues Junior at home during the weekend and they sounded mighty sweet. But then yesterday I had my first rehearsal with 'em, playing through my tank and TRRI with the volume cranked up to 5-6 and I was totally blown away by the rich sounds these pups produce. And they handle overdrive and distortion like it ain't no thang Smile Can't wait to hear what they sound like through my Vibrosonic Reverb, that'll be for next rehearsal.

And all I can think of now is getting some Lollars for my Jag as well...

Result! I'm jealous. Are they the regular Blackfaces or the Dirty set with the hotter Special S bridge pup. Did you go for flat poles and are you happy with bridge pickup sound.

Thanks DonBale, I sure appreciate that.

Sascha, here's a demo I did of the Lollar Jag pickups. I add some reverb about mid way through the demo. The only catch if you will is that I am using 250K pots and I had Jason wind the bridge a little bit (not much) hotter to better match the output of my Teiscos for when I switch guitars

I got the regular Blackfaces in all three positions, and much against Jason Lollars' advice I went for the staggered poles since my luthier didn't have the flat poles in stock (and me and Patience have never been the best of friends... Whatever ). But no complaints on the staggered poles though, I don't notice much about the D and G strings being louder than the others, in fact I think the overall sound is very well balanced.
The bridge pickup is great, it sounds a bit thinner and more trebly than the middle and neck obviously, but no harshness or icepicky sounds whatsoever. And I've never had much use for positions 2 and 4 on a Strat before, but I found myself playing stuff like "The Wind Cries Mary" and "Under The Bridge" on the neck and middle pickups combined and it sounded absolutely beautiful, even with my limited skills Big Grin

I'm a Lollar fan from now on, no doubt about it Cool

Hi Jeff, I saw that demo on the Lollar site, it's what actually convinced me that I need some Lollars for the Jag as well Smile Will the 250K pots make a substantial difference ? I must say that on my Jag I got the pickups directly wired to the output, no more tone or volume controls in between, and I had the rhythm circuit taken out as well, only the lead circuit is connected.
