Permalink New Fender '68 Custom Vibrolux Reverb!

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Next

This could be interesting. Fender is supposed to show it at the NAMM Show. Same deal as the '68 PR, DR and TR they have already released. Out side of reduced negative feedback to dirty it up a bit the vintage channel could be pretty good. If not a resistor change could make it awesome....maybe.

Sight unseen I will order one when they become available. Worst case is I end up building a hand wired VR board for it. I love the cosmetics of the drip edge amps.

Too bad they didn't make this one a re-issue. As you know, the Custom Vibrolux Reverb isn't anything like a vintage Vibrolux Reverb. It's a different amplifier entirely. That's why they don't call it a reissue. I don't understand why they call it a Vibrolux. It only looks like one. If Fender would make a reissue Vibrolux, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

At what price?

That's probably going to be around $1.1K IMO.

Here is my take. A Twin I got. Same with a Deluxe Reverb, all old school hand wired stuff. A Princeton Reverb is just too gutless to be attractive to me. This amp and the others are closer to the originals than one might think. Yes, trem and verb on both channels, not a bad thing if it doesn't introduce noise. A tweed voiced custom channel, not bad either but I rarely use the normal channel of a BF Fender anyway. Maybe I would now with trem and verb and a tweed tone stack. I do own treed amps as well as BF stuff. The negative feedback circuit on the trem channel should be able to be blackfaced with the change of one resistors value. Viola! Clean 2-6L6 Headroom! BF Vibrolux RI at least in the trem channel. For the $1100 or so it will retail for it's worth a gamble. If I ended up putting an eyelet board in it at least I'd have the cool drip edge cab to do it in. I could scratch build from a Mojo/Marsh kit but would have to source a face plate and drip edge molding. It would be cheaper in the long run to hand wire one of the '68 customs. It's a win-win and I got GAS.

FYI-->This guy could do the trim work custom...

Tried one of the other "Silverface" amps Fender has been releasing and the stock Celestions just completely change the sound of the amp too much for my liking. If I wanted that sound I'd rather have a Vox...

Dario, I've seen his listings on the bay. Close but no cigar IMO. That product is much thicker than the originals and there are no corner pieces. Correctly mitered I think it would look acceptable.

I heard the new 68 Custom Vibrolux last night at a Fender Roadshow in Perth and it sounded great. Articulate, punchy, nicely voiced and dirtied up very well. Looked ace! Can't find any demos on the net, probably won't see one here in Perth, Australia for at least 18 months.

Any pics taken of the beast?

It's heartening to hear that, at least, it still exists. I know that I'm stoked. I have a '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb that I love and it surfs like hell won't have it. The sound is perfect for first wave Surf.

Nobody seems to like the custom vibrolux reverb. I played one recently and didn't notice any hissing or humming, thought it sounded great, nice dirty tone if that's what you're shooting for. I thought its still had that nice fender sparkle along with the dirt. I know it's not a actual reissue of the vintage vibrolux. But is a very nice, loud good surf amp And garage tone amp.
Does anybody like this amp stock besides me?

I've played several different examples. One was horrid, noisy and the weakest reverb I ever heard. I've played others examples that were much better sounding although the reverb never knocked me out on any that I tried. I have a tank but I use onboard reverb most of the time and it's very important to me.

I like the current Fender CVR but I don't see it as being the same sort of amp as most Fender Blackfaces. I see it more along the lines of a Bassman or a Marshall type amp. I'm very curious to hear the '68 Vibrolux.

This has been a confusing rumor...not sure if the new 68 Custom Vibrolux is a revamping of the CVR or if it's more in line with a silverface vibrolux (at least on the vibrolux channel). I had been led to believe the latter, but I read somewhere that it has 6v6 power tubes? Hope that was a misprint.

That had to have been a misprint.

I think it's disappeared since NAMM.

Putzing around the store last Friday and ran across one of these (new) and plugged in. Pretty nice actually, didn't appear particularly noisy (cranked the hell out of it at idle), trem & reverb on. Nothing else noise-wise that couldn't be taken care of with 2 mouse clicks in Audacity and live it would never be an issue. Pretty neat package. 2 channels that actually do have a distinct difference to them and both useable although I preferred 2nd channel.

Just following up to see if you finally got one of these & any impressions.

Badger, You found a '68 Custom Vibrolux in a store? 2-10" speakers, 2-6L6 power tubes, silver faceplate and drip edge trim?

I haven't seen anything for sale yet but really haven't looked in a couple of months.

Yep, was over at Dave's on Friday killing some time while the amp guy did something for me. Brand-new amp. Not on their website yet because their photo guy is off but just called over there and I wasn't on drugs. Drip-edge and all. I seem to recall it was in the $1199-ish area or something - mostly I just wanted to noodle for a couple minutes and then let you know that at least one is in the wild.

I'm going back over tomorrow while in town and will try to get some more specifics on speaker, tube layout from the back, etc. I don't gig anymore so a PRRI or my little Vox-y BJr do me fine. But if I were, this size package would be a terrific thing that can still ride in the backseat. (I'm partial also to 2x10" amps anyway.) I've schlepped TR's, half-stacks & JC-120's and that activity is highly over-rated at my age now.
Will let you know what I find out. Cool
