What is it that makes those early recording sound the way they do?
Yes I get that 98% of it is the hands of the player, the bends the picking the phrasing, but there is a sound a "Ptwoink!" I hear.
I hear a clean almost sterile guitar sound way up front in the recordings, kind of like the recording engineer said "your guitar is too loud turn down we will make you loud in the mix" and the guitarist listened. Could it be aggressive picking and thick strings picked up by a very good mic? HiFi??

I assume you are talking about Terry's guitar tone. Yuzo and Nobuhiro definitely don't have that plunk in their tone, at least as much. A lot of amps have a dynamic nob, and you can turn those way up. Also, a lot of Japanese guitars from that era have very microphonic pic ups. You that sort of gives everything a little extra pick noise. Terry also gives a very hard downstroke as often as he can, sometimes coupled with a quick hammer-on or bend that gives him a little plunk.
Dig the solo at 1:18. It's done on some sort of electrified shamisen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnHSgD4LTfA

I think that is still the guitar using the vibrato bar and picking harmonic squealie sounds (ZZ Top, Zac Wilde) give it that shamisen sound.
The man is a killer on the guitar.

I thought it was the Mosrite guitar that gives this sound. Here's a thread I strarted addressing this tone. http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/21213/
