Permalink Bass VI as a lead guitar

New Topic

I was just surfing YouTube videos, looking for some obscure older stuff that might have "instro potential" for our 50th Anniversary CD project and stumbled upon this vid of Lone Justice doing a live TV show back in the '80s where lead guitarist Ryan Hedgecock was playing a Bass VI as a lead instrument...in a pretty effective manner.

This ain't surf, so purists beware! I thought some of you might find this interesting. Smile

Sounds like a bit of overdrive and chorus going on.
For the era I guess it's cool, but not a super
Retro 60s sound.

Long as you're on the 80's, a band I liked a lot was The Long Ryders – a real guitar band inspired by the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and Flying Burrito Bros. I found them very engaging when I was in jr. college.
Not to be a pill, but I saw Lone Justice around the same time and thought they were too LA in the image-conscious way without really delivering. By contrast to the Ryders Justice was really laid back.
How about Blood On the Saddle? They were a red-hot guitar band that delivered the goods – stoked bluegrass Americana on a Tele blasted through a Marshall half-stack. Perhaps inspired by X, but not at all derivative, BotS offered frenetic, soulful shows, tight as all get-out and completely unself-conscious. Whatever happened to Blood On The Saddle?

Squink Out!

All I can say is you have to play the lead to Eastwood Outlaw by Crazy Aces on a Bass VI, through a big, loud Fender amp or Music Man if you have one. It's epic!

I have to find more songs like that to play on this wonderful beasty.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.
