For me the best concert that I ever watched, even better than Tina Turner or Fats Domino whom I saw in the mid 1970s, or any of The Beach Boys or the Dick Dale concert in Hamburg on March 26th,1995.
The sound was brilliant, the choice of songs amazing.
I sat beside the tent(my son had loaned a chair for me from Anne at her sales stand)with the sound boards - unfortunately the wind blew the scream camera just as the SURFARIS startet to play.
Simon, as you have mentioned the sound was SO much better in reality than you can hear in the videos !!!
Hope to return next year as I am dependig on support for traveling etc.

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Officially going to this as I've paid for a ticket and have my room paid for. Unsure if Mr. Joe lives in the area or if others have made recommendations but this summer will be my very first time to Italy (and Europe) and I hope to make it a broad cultural experience. Obviously one can use Trip Advisor, but I always like real direct experience in visiting an area. Has anyone posted pointers as to what to see, where to eat, where to drink (unfortunately more a microbrewery beer drinker than a wine drinker, but open to trying) what to do, or etiquette as far as dress or manners that might be different than in Kansas City. Although my Italian will be extremely limited, I've found on previous trips interactions with the locals are the best part of the trip in striving in maybe the smallest of ways to a global community of understanding and good will. I'm actually doing this trip in between jobs and will be in Europe for three months (was going to do less but flying in late May to late August was several hundred dollars less expensive) and hope to somehow make friends over there and become enlightened by their ways. Doing a loop from Denmark through Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Baltics, and Germany with this being my only detour as it appears there are inexpensive flights to that part of Italy. Hopefully this post wasn't too long. Sort of sad I won't make it to the convention in California this year as many of my favorite bands are playing there this year. Livorno from what I seen has mixed reviews... that waterfront looks great but as far as history some have said it lost some of its identity during the wars.

I have been there twice and surely may help) Not easy to find a craft beer, but food and local beer are great mostly everywhere, walking the channels and sitting where you find appealing is fun. But my food for these days is mostly Tiki Cocktails on a spot and burgers from Surfer Joe diner. Ponce bar is surely worth visiting as well. A lot of interesting places around Livorno if you have some time beside the fest. Mixed reviews? Never saw them. That’s the best place and time on Earth.

Glad you are coming! Mr. Joe lives about 500 meters from the festival location and the Surfer Joe Diner so I guess he knows the area ;)
Livorno has been partially destroyed during the war that’s true and it’s a BIG shame because LIvorno has a very particular name to be the most liberal city in modern history thanks to the Medici that owned it and made it a port open to any religion and political party (“Livornine” laws 1591). So this gave the chance to people from everywhere to come safely to Livorno without being prosecuted for their religion or for being omosexual, differently from what was happening instead in Firenze where the church was doing their bad things (as usual). So we in Livorno are all sons of bitches and pirates, and that’s probably a truth. Lots of pirates came to Livorno and it was a very important location for commerce via sea. Think that in Livorno at the American Market (Mercatino Americano) is where Levi’s jeans arrived to Europe for the first time after the war and for a long time everything coming to Europe from USA was arriving in Livorno and then distributed. In Livorno it was founded the Italian Communist Party (Partito Comunista Italiano) in 1921. But due to this extreme liberal way of thinking we are all very interesting people
Anyway Livorno is certainly not a destination for your visit and since you come here - with all due respect for almost the rest of Europe - I highly recommend to start going AROUND here: Firenze, Siena, drive to Rome, Napoli and when you drive south pass along the coast and you can stop in Cerveteri, Civitavecchia. If you go north instead: Genova, Bologna, Milano, Torino, Venezia… about everywhere you go you can find beautiful things.

Stoned Jesus is ok but we also have wonderful surf bands in Ukraine)

I'm not surprised there are better bands in the Ukraine. It seems the more you know about music the less you know. So many underground great bands out there. Hopefully we'll meet and you can educate me more... that would be great. It is shaping up to be a great experience.
