Permalink having picks and such laying around

the only picks I've ever had are the ones you get in the mail when you buy Slacktone CDs off their website. Cool I lost the one I've kept with me at school a few weeks ago, and so I've been playing only with my fingers.

this quote by wooza in another thread grabbed my attention. I hear that often. someone will say "can I borrow a pick, I lost mine," or "I gotto go buy a pick, the old one has worn out".

I just find that amazing. here's a shot of what I grabbed laying around in my study. this is just what I have laying on my desk and on teh stereo table ( where the practice amp is) . It's not counting the ones spread around the house, in guitarcases, and the 5 or so I always have in my wallet.

Im the same with strings, tubes, cables, patch chords, wall warts and what have you. just good to have a few extra around.

anyone else own more than one guitar-pick? Very Happy

I always have to have picks everywhere. A guitarist that does not keep a surplus of picks is a looser!

I always have to keep a few in my wallet, you never know where you may wind up with a guitar around and no pick. This used to happen to me, and I would not be able to showcase my skills.

I always have a "pick pocket" with me -- one of those little freebie keychains that hold about 7 picks or so that Fender included with a bunch of their orders. Hell, I've been using it so long, the black is starting to wear off!

I also keep a pick in the strings of every guitar I own, in addition to a tin full of picks I keep by where I practice, and a small cache of picks in each case of the guitars I play out with most frequently.

In short, it's a raaaaare occasion when I ever have to ask for a pick to borrow. Whenever I do, I hang my head in shame.

I will admit, I don't usually have a lot of extra stuff just laying around. I keep a few patch cables and maybe a full-length instrument chord that has fallen out of my usual rotation, but I don't have spare extension chords or wall warts or anything like that. I also buy strings in mass quantities, so I'm pretty much gauranteed to have a backup set in addition to the emergency set i keep in my guitar case.

Cool yes, always have picks around---in my guitar boxes, on the amps, in my pocket, on my desk, on the n ightstand, in my truck, whereever. in the cases, the damn things are everywhere in the house. got extra cables, wall warts, extra sets of strings, capos, stomps boxes, mini amps, maxi amps, extra cases and gig bags, raw speakers, empty spkr. cabs, dead guitars, usable guitars and current guitars. slide guitars, surf guitars, blues guitars, patch cables and spare cables. straps, polish, polishing cloths, a sad little tuner i don"t use. guitar paraphanelia everywhere. more crap related to guitardom i'm sure. GAS!!! yes, i have guitar picks laying around.!!

Cool hell yes i got STOMPS boxes! but i can"t spell.

i found a pick a while back...i stopped using them years ago, influenced by Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker and Mark Knofler, i decided to learn to play without them, too plastic!! too generic - good for fast double picking though i can't deny. Now that I'm going more and more surf i face the decision, whether to start again, or not!! i was always loosing them or chewing them up.

What is a wall wart?

clears throat ~ "ahhemmm"

a vall vort is commonly known as an AC adapter (or power supply).

If you have more of these than you have picks, then you're rich! haha

I have shoe boxes full of picks... but that's only because:

a. I work at a music store
b. I once went to a music store supply warehouse close-out sale
c. I play guitar and am compulsive when it comes to accessories....

So many picks out there and I am without a one. Crying
I can see that they'd be easy to lose and I figure it makes sense to have a bunch around. I've just never needed or used any until really recently. The two that I've had in my history I just happened to receive so I used those. Now that I've lost one (and I'm not sure where the other is back home) I figure I should go get a handful more sometime soon.

I was tidying up a bit around here and found twelve or thirteen extra picks. Most of them were pretty worn down, but a few seem to be brand new.

I have at least two picks in my pockets at all times. Here within arms reach are about 50 more. I do buy them in the little dunlop 12 pack baggie. 3-4 baggies at a time though. ( I hate to be without one when I want one)
So don't feel like a strange person WR. Most of the players I know of do keep lots of picks around.
Joel

I usually try to keep picks on me at all times, and if I manage to find myself without a pick, I've a few things in my wallet that'll get me through in a pinch. The thought of having too many picks is about as ridiculous as the thought of having "too much money." Laughing

I too didn't use a pick for years. But know that all I want to do is play surf, I am loving the picks. I love how they click on the strings and bring out the reverb.

I used to have just one type of picks - blue Sharkfins. And I played 11’s Pyramid strings on all guitars but the Jag. I started getting different strings for each guitar, to bring out the strong points of each one. Now it’s funny, even though in my head 11 Pyramids are still my favorites theorically, I don’t use them anymore! After having changed to different types of strings I started trying different picks for the same reason. And it’s really obvious all of a sudden how much the pick alters the sound. My guitar teacher gave my a good handful of all kinds of picks, when I started at age 11, to find out about the different feel, handling and sounds possible. Then I had a favorite for a while, but they where too small and smooth, they sounded perfect to my ears then, but they rocketed away during rockabilly solos too often so I had to find a substitute. And so I stayed with sharkfins for all guitars for a long time.
But now it’s great, since I don’t play live anymore, to have the chance to choose just for sound reasons! And make good use of variety.

Picks are like socks... WHere do they go? I have millions yet can't find em when I need em.

Like probably many here I got one of Dave Wronski's picks at a show. Dunlop Gels the medium/light green ones. It sat around as a souvenir until one day when I picked it up and used it. It was startling. I don't have the best ears but I could discern a major difference between the gel and the Fender mediums I had been using. I kept trying to fool myself in a blind test and the gel was brighter and fuller everytime. They are thinner than I would prefer and they break more ofter due to their brittleness. They sound different from other picks when they hit the floor...harder, like glass. Dave has told me they sound closest to real tortoise shell.

LOL, yes, and both missing socks and picks often turn up in some corner in the laundry machine!

My problem is that I always end up w/ tons of extra picks, but none of them are the stock I use...

Same here. I bought 10 of my fav brand (.71 mm Dunlops) last time I went to the music shop and 2 have gone AWOL already...as for the crappy ones I don´t like, they´re happy inside a coffee tin. I´ve thrown a few away but they seem to reproduce. Laughing
