For anyone interested in the Cucamonga studios in the early 60's that brought you "Wipeout" and "Pipeline", as well as recording sessions from Johnny Fortune, The Tornadoes, Conrad and the Hurricane Strings, Johnny Barakat, and let's not forget, Frank Zappa.

Cool stuff. I live about 15 minutes from there and often take a ride through the area that used to be the location of Studio Z. The street has been widened and completely rebuilt. It's all gone now except for the music.

The building number where the studio was (8040) is now a beauty salon, next to a tattoo parlor. The original building where Paul Buff started Pal Studio is actually still standing. It's south on Archibald and is now an antique shop. But all of Zappa's work and most of the surf music was recorded at 8040.
We're going to show the film at festivals and at private screenings. There will be a DVD release eventually.

Technically, the original version was recorded at Pal. It had been arranged and produced originally at Pal, but band management took it to Downey and re-recorded it. Plus, The Chantays were minors and any contract with Pal Studios wasn't enforcable. It happens with the smaller studios. They knew they had a hit on their hands, so they re-recorded it and kept all the rights to it. Ce'st la vie...
But yes, the version we hear today was recorded at Downey.
Don't you just love the underbelly of music recording?

I recently read about the two different recordings of "Pipeline" in the Surf Music U.S.A. book. It would be really interesting to hear the Pal studio recording which according to the book didn't contain any electric piano (!). Anyone know if this first version ever has surfaced anywhere?

I've posted this before, as I know Jim Frias, sax player, for The Chantays(short while)and then the Nocturnes.
He said that they went to record Pipeline ( He cant remember where)
and he and the Piano player shared a Mic, and it was too distorted to use
as a release. I wonder if this could have been at Pal studios.

As in, backed by portions of the Crossfires? "Hey kids, what time is it?" "It's CHUNKY time!"
