Los Straitjackets' version of The Munsters is always a crowd pleaser for us, along with our instrumental arrangements of California Dreamin' and A Whiter Shade of Pale.

Lerxst, do you have any links to your band - I'd like to hear California Dreamin' or Whiter Shade of Pale.

Sure thing. We only have a recording of CA Dreamin':

I wish more bands would cover The Toads' Morpheus. Maybe you?

Thanks for the link, lerxst. Nice version of California Dreamin'.... Our band (3rd Wave) covers a lot of 60's pop hits, and I'm always interested in other band's takes. Below is 3rd Wave's cover of "A Whiter Shade of Pale", performed at the local bowling alley.

I'm glad you posted this queston as I'm in the same boat as you right now. I really like the idea of adding instrumental versions of '60s vocal pop hits to a setlist. It seems like a good way to connect with and engage your audience. "Runaway" by Del Shannon is a good choice in my opinion.

Very cool, Casey! I got the idea for CA Dreamin' when I saw Nokie Edwards perform it last year - I was pretty disappointed with his version and felt it need more power. Then we added more Beatles (A Hard Day's Night, Paperback Writer, In My Life), Slacktone's version of Be My Baby and A Whiter Shade of Pale. We are currently working up Unchained Melody and Stand By Me to get more slower tunes in the mix.

Here's a couple of vids covering She Said She said and California Man..Also dig Slacktone's Be My Baby/Don't Worry Baby version...awesome!

I love an Anchorage band playing California Dreamin'! Probably goes over well when it's 20 below.
Seriously, great version, I'll be working on that one.

Great stuff from Lerxst and North of Malibu. A lot of great songs with great melodies from the 60's - many work great as instrumentals. Almost anything by the Beatles is a crowd pleaser. We've worked up "All My Lovin'" and "And I Love Her". Also do a version of "Age of Aquarius".

Paint it Black is fun, you can do a lot of things with that riff.

I'll second The Munsters as well as any 60s TV and Film theme songs - James Bond medley, Man With No Name trilogy medley, Batman, Addams Family, Gilligan's Island, Danger Man (also known as Secret Agent, which is where we get Secret Agent Man), Pink Panther (and the Clouseau theme).

I've always been partial to Rawhide (not the TV one, but the one The Ventures did - and I think either Link Wray or Duane Eddy (or both) did first)

I assume you don't have keys but if you have solid rhythm guitar:

Telstar
Out of Limits
Tequila

And of course anything else you can arrange (some of which The Ventures already did) - like House of the Rising Sun - some of the "psychedilic" ones like Pictures of Matchstick Men, Green Tambourine, and Incense and Peppermints could be very cool if you've got the players.

Steve

We've taken to whipping out White Rabbit when we're at a loss for something to play. It always brings smiles and chuckles from the audience.
