Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers.

I've seen at least separate version of the same idea all playing Misirlou. The lack of original ideas in this world worry me.

Chalk it up to parallel evolution... And if you want to demonstrate tremolo picking on a guitar, Misirlou is a pretty obvious choice.

A few years ago a friend of mine built a "remote controlled guitar" with parts from a toy RC car. It used a small motor to strum the strings (a bit like the eggbeater in the above video) and another one to move a slide along the neck. Ok, it was not the invention of the century, but at the time it seemed cool and novel. Of course I've seen the same idea countless times on many websites since, but he built his before the internet and his was his original idea at the time (as it was for a lot of people who built the same device without having seen it first elsewhere). The fact that people have a similar idea and illustrate it with the same representative song doesn't necessarily denote a lack of imagination. The fact that we can now have instant access to pretty much anybody's ideas, inventions or projects makes it look that way.
