Has anybody here ever really noticed how much Ivan Pongracic and Evan Foster look alike? This was brought to my attention at the Pilgrims show.
Two damn fine guitarists, separated at birth or part of some governmental experiment.

That's pretty funny, Jake! I thought the resemblance was mostly due to both of us having huge heads! (What happened at the SP show to make you come to this conclusion?) You know, it's funny you bring up Evan, cause for the last week I've been listening to the (surf-era) Boss Martians a LOT. I haven't really listened to them in a long time, probably a year or likely even longer, so I kinda forgot how good they were. I have a fully-packed CD-R comp I made for myself of all my instrumental favorites by them, and damn, Evan is a truly AMAZING player! Such feel, such chops, such taste, such TONE! It's a real shame that so few people mention the Martians around here. For my money, they were among the very best of nineties surf. I like the modern Boss Martians, and I thought their most recent album was especially good. And they've sure been getting a LOT more attention playing their new music than they ever did as a surf band. Evan is such a talented musician that he deserves to make a good living playing music, and I very much hope this pans out for him. But I do miss the surf Boss Martians - a lot. Maybe one day we'll get them back, even if for a bit.... Ivan —Ivan |

We were discussing Evan Fosters' Instrumentals. I think it was with Jeff. Since the Martians are based here we have some contact with Evan and those involved getting the band some press and such via Little Steven's radio show. I don't know how the comparison got onto you. Jeff said Ivan Foster I am pretty sure. I have a terrible memory these days due to chemo brain. I have no idea how I pass at school even. My papers are 3.5s and my tests are 2.5s. The complete opposite of my pre-chemo schooling. Anyways, I had a bit of an epiphany at the comparison and the fact that you both are great players. The only difference is one plays a cooler guitar. |

Ha, surf super group. Dusty has a pretty big head doesn't he? If so, I think they got a drummer. All we need is a bassist. One second though Dusty might just have a big face... |

Evan looks way more like Arch Hall Jr. than anyone else. -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

Actually, here's a true story: Art B. of MuSick some time ago toyed with an idea of having Evan and me record an album together. The idea never went anywhere, though I would have loved to have done it. But I think everybody was just too busy. This would have been around '98 or so, maybe a bit later. Anyway, I told Rip about it at some point, and he got really enthusiastic and insisted that we'd have to include him if we ever do it! He said he'd even just play rhythm guitar! But he immediately came up with the whole 'big-head' tie-in between the three of us, he himself having posessed a head of rather large proportions. One idea he had was to have the front cover emulate the whole Three Tenors thing, with Evan with a Jag, me with a Jazzmaster and Rip with a Strat (that was before he was really playing a Jag, and I was playing my Jazzmaster quite a bit at the time). I think he had some kind of a head-related name for us, too, but for the life of me I can't think of it now. I do remember him pointing out that all three of our heads weren't only big in a physical sense, another thing we had in common.... Ivan —Ivan |

So does this mean there's a correlation between a big head and killer surf guitar skills? I'm gonna stop deleting all my junk "head enlargement" emails. |

I was recently introduced to Evan Foster's music and I'm really impressed. What kind of music do the Boss Martians play? —Science friction burns my fingers. |

They started out as a very trad hot rod/surf band in the 90's. They did both instros and vocals. Really great stuff (although I'm not a huge fan of their vocals). Later on, the Boss Martians morphed into something else entirely: some have described it as garagey 70's style rock but I really don't know. Evan Foster released a solo album a few years ago (with Dusty Watson on drums). This is really excellent if you are open minded. His surf influences peek out once again, and there are some really great tracks. Check out his myspace and listen to Surfer's Anthem for a taste. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Hey, don't pin this one on me, Tiki. I was pretty much sober that whole weekend, and I know I didn't say anything about the Boss Martians of Evan Foster. Besides, we all know it's pronounced "ee-von" of Madeira fame. I will say that, resemblance or no, Evan Foster's version of "the Girl Can't Dance" on Guitar Ace is one of my favorite tracks, surf or otherwise, that I've heard in the last 2-3 years. And Ivan just plain shreds, but doesn't ever sing (not that I've heard at least). ~B~ |
