I'm a fair player with pro, vintage gear, can read charts and keep a tight beat and understand harmony. Playing with a good drummer- we could use another guitar and/or bass player to complete the band. Looking for someone with some drive to work out slightly challenging music – "spaghetti western" (Ennio Morricone wrote DA BOOK) as well as classic surf, Barry, Bacharach, Rota – and hone it to concert level. Capisce?

We practice in Silverlake and I also have access to a hall in Fairfax.

What do you mean, "approved"? That you have the accepted brand of gear for this style by so many so-called purists?
Sigh.

Old Fender gear does sound pretty good, no?
This it does.

I lack a proper tank still. Using Gibson Reverb III. I need about $2000 for the exactly right gear – any donors out there?

Well there are lots of interesting spots along the curve to perfection. I just think it's good to have a goal. I will never sound exactly like the Astronauts or Davie Allen or the Ghastly Ones... but the surf ideal of playing as best one can, hitting all the 16th notes together – that's honing! It's inspiring, that level of craft and intensity. Quite the opposite of 'rockist' sloppiness.

Best of luck! I'm an instrumental junkie myself, there are so many great aspects of instrumental music still left to be explored.

I'm with you, I try to play as accurately as I'm able to. It's a type of aesthetic I appreciate, especially when it's applied to melody and arrangement.

I was actually just spoofing on our recent "Fender Fetish" topic and not serious- hence, the emoticon and prediction that I throw my Fenders aside. Sorry that didn't read that way on the screen.

I walked right into that one! D'oh! I just hate the prices of new gear.
Anyhow, I am not against playing surf music on typical gear at all! I'd like to hook up with some others of like mind!

Sounds like a great concept for a band. We've managed to work up one Bachrach tune so far, "Do You Know The Way To San Jose". If I was based in LA I'd definitely be interested.

You might try adding what area of LA you live or work in.

This actually sounds like a really cool project. I would totally be interested except that I just honestly don't feel that my guitar playing level is "band ready" yet. Especially lately, I've been slacking on my practice (BAD JOSH!). Also, I don't have the gear either. I am set for guitars, but I only have a Fender champ practice amp. Not really gig worthy. And my tank needs some work before its gig ready as well (dwell knob doesnt work. basically its either full dwell or no reverb at all).
Anyways, I wish you the best of luck! And make sure you post details of any gigs you end up doing. I'd be very interested in hearing this sound

Josh, Jack, Casey, et.al.: thanks for your interest. If in a mood to work on some tunes, give a call or write.
I live between Glendale and South Pasadena, the NE corner of LA. Playing almost weekly with a drummer of like interest, downstairs at his Silverlake home – very nice set up in a faintly tiki-themed den We jammed twice with a keyboardist but he's not inclined to the work we've set out for ourselves which is admittedly a bit challenging. At this point Mike and I will just focus on a short set we can take to a marginal, arty venue like PehrSpace in Echo Park and see if we can attract some attention from other players. We're open to all comers. Write me if you want to hook up to jam. I won't bite!

James, et.al.,
Set list we are focusing on now:
"Exodus Theme" (Ernest Gold) "Faster, Pussycat" (Boss Tweeds) "The Sicilian Clan"(Ennio Morricone) "Midnight Cowboy"(John Barry, a la Jeff Beck Group) "Clockwork Orange/Queen Mary's Funeral Processional" (G.F. Handel/W.Carlos a la Astronauts) Also horking on Morricone tunes from Sergio Leone movies – "Fistful of Dollars", "Man with a Harmonica", "Once upon a Time in the West". I have a couple fresh originals just composed, one a slow minor almost jazz thing with a gypsy/slavic feel and another frenetic (also minor) confrontation of John Carpenter with Maestro Morricone.
I also have worked on a Dick Dale-ish rendition of Maurice Jarre's "Lawrence of Arabia". I guess you could say we're a cinematic guitar outfit with an exotic edge.
