Ivan, sorry for the threadjack, but I hear you. I live in a '30s house and with no basement, my music stuff is in my study on the attic ... one flight up, 180 degrees, 4 yards, 90 degrees and up another flight which makes a 180 itself. - all stairs are a whoping 30 or so inch wide.
Ive found the perfect solution of this though. I keep my cabs in the groundfloor hall much to the chagrin of my wife I might add. ... but my son has developped a wierd fascination for the piggyback bolts on the cabs, he cant pass them without turning them a few times
Still, I dont have a strong back and I glad I have the wheels, also it's much better here at clubs and pubs. plus I have to carry the stuff a long way at our rehearsal space.
but one thing I agree with you completly, amps and reverb units I'll rather carry!

Kyle,
I'm looking your project again, as I'm planning to build a new amp.
I'm curious about the front baffle. Do you have a pic without the grillcloth? I'd like to see it how it looks like from the front. Is it the same as it looks like from the back? Just two holes for the speakers?
I'm asking because in the pictures the color of the grillcloth is different behind the logo and at the middle of the two speakers....
And one question about the tolex. First you glue the tolex on all the sides and then use the heat gun or everytime you glue a piece of tolex use the heatgun?

I build "dollies" for all my piggyback cabs that are long enough and wide enough to extend slightly beyond the extremities of the cabinets to protect the cab from rolling and lugging impacts. I mount the casters directly to the dollies with machine screws and t-nuts.
On valuable vintage cabinets that have never had wheels attached, I remove the existing sphinx glides and carefully locate the mount screw holes so that they will exactly line up with the holes already in the cabinet. It's not too hard to do.
The dollies also protect the underside of the cabinets when sliding those heavy rascals in and out of trunks, up on loading docks and stages. Makes good sense to me. I like wheels on everything.

Yes the baffle is different from the back I will hunt for some pics for ya the front of the baffle is like a picture frame all around and the middle of the baffle has a thin wood beam and to the left corner of the front baffle has a triangle piece of wood for the logo, yes it has 2 speaker holes.
When you tolex you will need to use a paint brush for the glue
When you tolex a speaker cab you start with the sides first and the last 2 pieces are the top and bottom you will do the same pattern for the head as well but heads can be tricky because of the front slants.
1st. You brush glue to the back of the tolex and then you brush glue to the wood and then you apply the tolex on, you do this to every piece of tolex.
2nd the heat gun is for the flaps and corners so they stick but you have to always apply hand pressure as well to keep.

It'll be great if you can post some pics!
The picture frame is a different piece of the baffle that holds the speakers? Because from the pics I saw that the grillcloth is stapled at the back of the baffle that holds the speakers....
About the tolex, you don't need to cut it when the cab has small flaps? Like the oval shapes at the behind of the reverb tank? Just use the heatgun and the tolex takes the shape?
I have applied tolex only to a square type (like speaker cab) cabinet that doesn't have flaps.... But now I'd like to build a small combo with a back baffle like the reverb tank or the Bassman that has these holes for the tubes....

Ivan, you should paint the screws on the logo of the cab black.
Wow, Jake. That is something that _I_ noticed, but didn't think anybody else would! You're either among the most perceptive people I've ever known, or you sat there with a magnifying glass examining the photos for half an hour! Anyway, yes, I'll probably take care of that at some point...
that's one of the first things i noticed...

You still need to trim the tolex to fit the anlges on the head the more heat you apply the more the tolex looses it's pattern and becomes to flat that's why you need to measure and trim the right amount off the less heat the better.
I could not find any pics of the just the front baffle but I do have these.

Thanks Kyle...
Are the two baffles stuck together? Or you hold them together with the grillcloth?

No it's just 1 baffle, the baffle is held together by staples and or nails so it holds it's own without the grill cloth, the grill cloth is the last thing held together by staples.

ok.... there are two kinds!
1 baffle like Kyle's and maybe most of vintage Fender and 2 baffles for front-loading cabs. Both have the triangle for the logo...
Now, I understood!

but why would you still need a triangle for the logo? i was under the impression that the grillcloth was flush with the baffle, at least with the back-loading ones, that's the way it is with all front-loading cabs i've seen...i know with front-loading ones there would be a triangle for the logo because the grillcloth has to be taken off separately...

Maybe without the "picture frame" the speaker would touch the grillcloth.... Some space is needed.

i see. that's kinda pointless if ya ask me. i think they should have made it one piece, having that extra 'frame' doesn't add to the sound at all, and you can barely even tell.
