Permalink ONBOARD REVERB MOD! Anyone know of this?

New Topic

I saw this on EBay:

Item # 190074321757

This little cable mod is supposed to turn your first channel into a dwell and tone control, to simulate a outboard reverb unit. It's an easy cable to put together, 1/4" male on one end RCA female on the other........

Any one heard of this or tried it?

Haven't tried it but it should work...I had an internal mod done to a Deluxe Reverb clone that likely was much the same...for $10 what do you have to lose!

www.northofmalibu.com

yeah...even 10 bucks (plus s/h) sounds over-priced for that cable.
Most guys have cables like that falling out of drawers and bags.......

Confused

Well, aye do, anyway... I'll give it a shot and report.

If it drips really good, I'll sell my 1962 Fender Tank and buy a new Jaguar!

oh, btw...I found this somewhere.... it accomplishes the same thing, I believe...

_This is an easy mod which requires no soldering. Most people rarely ever use the normal channel on dual channel Fender amps with reverb. So what you can do is turn the normal channel into a reverb unit.
1. Get an RCA to 1/4" cable from your local electronics store or Radio Shack.

  1. Plug the RCA end of the cable into the output jack of the reverb pan.

  2. Plug the 1/4" end into the input of the Normal channel.

Now your reverb knob is a "dwell" control. And the Volume knob on the Normal channel controlls the overall reverb volume. The new EQ adjustments you now have, give you control over your reverb much like that of the Fender Reverb Unit. _

Easy Louie.... don't dump the tank too fast! (although a new Jag sounds nice!)

I see this mod as useful for a club gig were space and time are the issue. One of those multi-band nights when you have to be on and off stage quickly, just bring the Vibrolux... plug and play.

But when at all possible, I will always use the Showman and the tank! No little cable will turn a Schwinn into a Harley.....

i've tried it, although i do not have a fender amp, but its very similar.

it did give me a bit more drip, i didnt know that the reverb turned into a dwell, though, so i might give that another try and toy around with it.

yeah, its a lot cheaper to get your own wires and solder them yourself.

Hokay! WON'T be selling my TANK anytime SOON......das a fac.

Here's the deal. I did this phono/rca patchcord thing on my '73 Pro Reverb and THIS is what I got.....

Connecting the output of the PAN to the input of the NORMAL CHANNEL..

a. completely defeats the Reverb Control knob on the Vibrato Channel.

b. makes the volume knob of the normal channel behave like the Reverb Control on the Vibrato Channel (which is now defeated).

c. Gives you treble and bass and bright-switch control over all reverb sent through the normal channel.

Conclusion: If you want to control the TONE of your reverb, this is the patch for you. Otherwise...it's the same reverb as without the patch...which means...with my rig, anyway, NO DRIP.

I didn't get ANY drip or whip from this patch, regardless of how I set the knobs on the front of the amp.

Sounds great; plenty of tone control; no drip or whip.

Glad to be of service!

Louie Seven

I'have never tried it but the Normal and Vibrato channels on Fender amps are out of phase with each other and I would't think it would allow you to get a tank's performance out of it. I could be wrong. Dan Torres has a "Righteous Reverb Mod" that he claims really opens up the sound of the reverb. I have never ordered the kit, but I do have his "Full House" kit in my #1 Dual Showman Reverb head and it will blow the crap out of the other six that I have. His mod makes the tone controls really work and the overall gain in the amp is up maybe 25% over a stock one. I always use that head when playing outside.

Best Reverbs (come from tanks)

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

playing outside always seems to require a lot more power, don't it ?
I usually take TWO amps for outdoor shows. (usually the 4th of July)

The two channels are out of phase once the reverb is "recovered" by the reverb channel. However, in this case, I think you're going straight from the tank into the Normal channel and bypassing the "output" jack/recovery section of the Reverb channel. So, the Normal channel is acting as the "recovery" circuit instead and won't be out of phase with anything. At least, I think that's how it's supposed to work.

I've heard one person use this (on a BF pro Reverb). It sounded pretty good.

My understanding was that the dry signal from each channel arrived at the summing point upstream of the final 12AX7 (12AT7) out of phase with one another. I am more of a hacker with a soldering iron as opposed to an engineer........ed

Reverse the + and - on the jack that you wire up to the rca cable if they're out of phase. Not saying that they are because I haven't tried it but that would be the way to reverse it.

BTW I split my signal and run my outboard tank into the normal channel of one of my amps through a volume pedal so I can get no reverb or maximum and all the flavors in between.

There is Surf east of Sepulveda.

I am a newb here, but I just did this mod to my 74 twin reverb and it sure does add a lot more reverb. to the amp. If I put all the normal channel's controls to 10, I get so much reverb it feeds back. I wish I had a reverb tank to compare this to, but it sounds pretty dang cool to me.

As a variation on this theme, I was thinking of trying out using two amps - with one just for reverb.... i.e: FX send to tank, then tank out to a second amp. I tried it at home and it sounded pretty good. Not sure if I'll try it at a gig - maybe it's a bit over the top...... hmmm, but then .... and this would work on the system you were discussing as well ..... then you could put a delay unit in the line from the tank to amp (or channel) two..... think of the drip with the reverb signal delayed 200ms or so ....hmmmm

Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery.

I fiddled around with using two amps one really wet and the other set dry and I never thought it sounded very good. A friend of mine in high school had an Ampeq reverb tank that had satelite speakers in it and it too sounded pretty hokey. I have heard guys splitting the signal to two amps through a delay that sounded pretty awesome though.......ed

with my set up i just daisy chain the tank between normal and vibrato channels with a patch cable. It allows you to have the Normal channel clean and the vibrato channel as wet as it can get, by adjusting the volume and tone controls you can get a wide wide range of drip. also with the all clean channel it really adds some puch to the tone, i find allowing me to push the volume more

This mod clearly enhanced the amount of reverb and gave me much better controll with it's sound, being able to dial out most of the metalic/hall'ish sound it produced when dialed over 4. It does not suck up the tone either in the same way as before. I also ran the signal through my T-rex Comp-Nova (Compressor) and back to amp, this gave me even more flexibility and knobs to fiddle with, actually allowing me to have two different presets Wink . I wonder how it would be or if it's possible/tested doing so with a reverb-unit f.ex. the FRV-1, anyone tested this? Another type of tube may be better suited prehaps for the V1, if it stays as a reverb channel?

The mod referenced in the OP only affects the return side of the reverb circuit - to increase the drip to the level of an outboard tank you have to drive the pan harder with the send amp. That's what the DWELL control (and the 4-watt driver tube/OT) in the tank circuit does; with this mod the amp's Normal Channel's VOLUME control is in fact acting like the tank's MIX control, not a DWELL. I've done this mod internally to some Fenders - it does enhance the EQ=ing capability of the reverb and can provide more gain to the return, but that's it. In short, DON'T SELL YOUR OUTBOARD TANK, this won't duplicate it.

Thanks, Mike. I'm also disappointed in the confusion about this mod. I've actually gone through the trouble of replacing the Normal channel with an authentic 3-knob circuit and it still doesn't sound the same as the real thing. That's because the tiny 12AT7 driver doesn't have the power to drive the tank like the 6K6. There just isn't a way to get a combo amp to match the outboard reverb units unless that puny driver tube is replaced with something stronger.

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

BJB, the only way I've seen to approximate the outboard tank's drive with a two-channel Fender reverb combo is to rewire the 12AT7 driver socket for an EL84 and replace the original reverb driver tranny with a reissue tank-type driver tranny (EL84 = same output impedance as the 6K6/6V6). Rewiring the Normal channel as a classic 3-knob circuit (at the instrument input) will then get you pretty darn close, but that's a lotta work.

I tried this mod with my Twin Reverb and it sounded awesome....no kidding it really did sound good....I'd be doing it now at gigs but I have a tank so....nothing sounds better than a tank.

It's a real easy mod....just try it and then you'll know.

Here's the link to Gerald Weber's reverb mod:
