Been playing surf riffs for 50 years. Specialize in Carl Wilson on strat w. overdubs. Have a hundred "videos" on youtube with tons of hits. Many Beach Boy covers (instrumental only). Some sappy stiff like "Monkey's Uncle" & "Be True to Your School". Would you guys consider this surf music? See www.youtube.com/user/webster1251

I am curious as to why you say "the holy grail of Fender guitar players is Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode". I've never seen Berry holding a Fender guitar.

Jake: Thanks for taking time to see site. I get a kick out of the short Carl Wilson riffs like in "Be True to Your School", etc.. You are right on. Berry was a Gibson man in his prime. I mentioned the "Strat" in my video only because of the notoriously better sound vs. the Gibson on such songs. More "surfy". Truth is, as much as Berry was the first and possibly best innovator for bridge riffs, his (as recorded) Gibson's lacked the depth of a well reverbed Fender. He later admitted this to some associates and has been known to play a Strat on a number of tours, though he remains partial to his signature big-body Gibsons.

Not to start the whole, "Were the Beach Boys ever a surf band?" question again, but it sure sounds like David Marks adapated Berry's style to the Beach Boys early hits. And that style has endured.
Well, I got to the party late but I wanted to listen to some of Rich's music. Welsome to SG101 and that's some nice guitar playing!

Noel & Jake: Thanks. I know lots of guys say they "knew" the guitar famous. I won't do that but I did learn a lot of playing back in the 60's from a few. My "I Can Hear Music" youtube upload is the only one in which I put a few old pics. First is me, on beach, minus the extra poundage I now carry. The next several are of me with Mike Love and Al Jardine after a show. Not "friends" but got to tune Carl's guitars for this show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joFV_szHnO4&list=UU87npDO2V9a_9BGk_xaTGGw

Noel: truth is, Brian was asleep, so I was asking Mike about Jan Berry's final car accident which had occurred a few months earlier. Don't remember much else. I did, however, get to watch Carl warm up with improvised riffs. I recently employed one of them as the last nine bars of my Help Me Rhonda cover. Youtube search webster1251 and Help Me Rhonda. Song is a little stiff but I opened it up at the very end.

When the West-Coast awakens, they're gonna love this.

Noel: I just put up a few Beach Boys overdubs on a new "cover" site called "coverium.com". They are already beating the competition on this new, interesting site.

Congratulations. I can only play like David Marks in my dreams, but sadly they don't record too well. Well done!

Since "Coverium.com" wanted some old Beach Boy stuff, I just recorded "Surfin' Safari" (instrumental). I really only did it to demo the lead riff, which one of the other contributor groups got very wrong.
