Maybe listen to the sax phrasing and use that to differentiate how you play the part. Often the sax would inject a counter-melody, or a distinct variation or improvisation on the main melody.

There is always the "move it up or down an octave" trick. Kind of a cliche but it can work.

If a sax player didn't show up for a gig I would take it as proof that God existed.

Not a sax guy?

Shame. No

IMO.

^ Yes

Your thread title threw me, because in response to a sax player in the band not showing up and what one might do, well that's easy!

We do Bikini Drag and some other stuff live without a sax player and don't seem to have any issues with phasing it with guitars.

Oh man! I forgot you are new, you have no idea of my hatred for the sax. It really isn't a hatred for the instrument, just what many people have chosen to play on the instrument!

How can you not like sax?

Adrian Terrazas FTW.

IMO.

LMAO now that was funny!

An interesting question. Apart from octaves, is there any other music theory/method that can be used in this situation?

Reverse the riff. requires some thought, but gives a cool effect.

IMO.

I think you just have to come up with something different to put in the spot. It may be a challenge, but presumably you like challenges.

With Exotic the first thing you notice (across the rather numerous early versions), is that the sax part is never the same. In fact, the sax role in the song is seldom the same.

Kazoo solo!

Either you surf, or you fight.

I agree wholeheartedly with Jake.

The saxophone is a fine instrument, but I hate its application in Surf music. There are sooooooo many Surf tunes that I like that are destroyed once the sax player kicks in!

I challenge anyone to name one Surf song that wouldn't be better WITHOUT sax.

Maybe if Pharoah Sanders played Surf my opinion would change.

FWIW, I played saxophone for several years...

As a Sax/guitar player I have to say in video Number 9 posted, there is no need for sax. The guitarist has by himself just fine. Sax only really works when is has something to add and can banter directly and play off the guitar. The other side of it is simply, this is a guitarist site so I can argue all day long about sax and get nowhere. I personally dont like sax on everything myself, thats why I also play guitar.
The one thing that I have found as fact however, audiences love the sax and really respond positively when it comes out. It does add another dynamic to the performance. After all when performing it is all about the audience.

From the thread title I thought this was a reference to The Surfaris' "Wipeout" recording session (if I recall my urban legends correctly, the sax player had to help out at his dad's shop that day).

Hava Nagila and Night Rider by Dick Dale. Anything on the first two albums by the Fathoms.

Also, anything on the great "K-39" album by the Challengers!
