I am not a newb to playing music but I am a newb when it comes to technical stuff concerning the surf genre of music for some reason so bare with me.I have played on budget guitars most my life. Not that im too cheap its just what seems to be able to fit my budget with everything else in my life I have goin on. Much less I cant make a career out of playing guitar so I figure just for piddling around a cheaper guitar aint too bad right? I know some of you are hardcore vintage guitar fans and probably dont care for Squier...or you may who knows. But my main question is...Does anyone have any experience with a Squier Bullet Strat? Good surf tone? I have yet to lay my hands on it as I JUST purchased it online yesterday.I also purchased some D'Addario Flatwound Chromes as well.12 gauge . Is that gauge a bit too thick for this guitar I speak of ior is a good size? Any information is appreciated. Thanks guys!

There are many Squire fans on this site but usually for the higher end ones like the classic series. I picked up a Xaviere strat from Guitar Fetish a few months ago and think blows away the other low dollar competition( If you know how to do a proper setup).Keep the stock strings on it at first so you can return it if unhappy. In the future feel free to ask before pulling the trigger, lots of helpful folks here. And BTW welcome to the site!

I think so. I used mine almost exclusively (w/flatwound chromes - 11's I think) on my Everything Is Golden CD. At the time, I needed a guitar with a tremolo, and it was cheaper to buy the Squier than add one to another guitar! I'm very pleased with it, although I almost always to to my AVRI Jag these days.

You don't need a high end guitar for surf, but honestly a bullet or affinity is going to be "you get what you pay for" unless you upgrade it, which to me is a waste. My cousin has an affinity strat and it plays terribly, the frets are sharp, neck is cheap, tuners don't work, pickups sound dead and there isn't much resonance. Forget about using the vibrato arm, it can barely stay in tune as-is. The higher end Squiers are actually not bad, such as the classic vibe strats, they're a usable instrument. There's other strat copies that play better but to me the affinity/bullet series are toys.

A good setup will go a long way into making an inexpensive guitar feel like a million bucks.

I don't know, I think I got pretty good results out of my toy... I've played worse guitars that cost a good bit more. It's all down to the individual guitar though. Best of luck!

I have a stock Bullet.
Is it as nice as my Squier Standard no, does it play surf yes.
I bought is as a refinish/build project and have never got around to changing anything yet.
You will find a whole lot of love for the Bullet at Squier-talk.com.
You will more than likely need to get more springs to put in on when you change out those strings.
Here is a fool proof method to set up the tuning.
I use it for all my Strat type trems and the ONLY issues I have had for the last few years is with big temperature changes.

Yea I know its a cheapy toy kinda guitar but honestly thats what I bought it for. Just something to play around on....like I had said before im not looking to play any shows or anything I just needed something I can play around on and annoy the wife lol. I dont know much about how to tell if a pickup sounds like crap but as long as the guitar can make some surfy tones ima be happy lol. And if I end up replacing the pickups later I think itll be cool. I will still save money as compared to buying a $500 dollar guitar or something. I have watched a few videos over the bullet on youtube and they dont seem to be too bad.....I have a lot of extra guitar parts layin around too so if it dont stay in tune well I will just replace the ol tuners. Which even if I had to buy em new it wouldnt cost a whole lot. With the pickups listed/recommended above and some new tuning keys I think id be out about $80 bones at most. It might just end up being worth it to go ahead and do that. Hmmmm...thanks again guys!

Brett, don't bother with the tuners or pickups until you play the guitar for a while. Even cheap tuners hold tuning - they just might not be very precise when tuning up or may be made out of less expensive metal. But they won't slip.
I have heard plenty of great things about the modern Bullets. Barring a great used score, you won't get a much more serviceable guitar for the money.

These would be way better for surf, and you could get just two if you get a custom guard from warmoth.

Altar those pick ups look awesome! I must say I would pop those in my guitar just because they remind me of a retro 60's B movie sci-fi flick lol. I just youtubed them and they seem to sound freakin awesome....however to my untrained ear they sound the same as any other pickup. So say I was to buy them tonight...it would only be because I like how they look lol. But for $90 I dont think I could buy them just for looks....I will look into them later tho if I decide to change out my pick ups. Thanks for posting!

They are awesome, in both looks and sound, and taste and smell. But gfs pups are very cheap and sound as good as Duncans. Those tubes are the best for surf.

Uh....no.
A stock Bullet Squier should be decent if you want to begin learning the guitar.

Oops. Well then you don't need a new guitar to play surf. You can play surf on any guitar.
