That "informal relationship" sounds like a good deal to me!

IMO.

Greetings Altar from Austin's sister city down under. I like a pbass and wanted something to match the vintage white, brown tortoise shell MIJ jag and jazz the guitarists use.

It's a 2010 p/j Jag Squier body, AllParts block/bound neck with Gotoh Res-O-Lite tuners, locally made (Mick Brierley) hand wound pups and it sounds awesome.

As good as it is, I still prefer my '66 Ibanez hollowbody.

Had no electronics when I bought it but I was lucky enough to find some huge sounding Tiesco pups in near mint condition.

Bassist Stormy Patterson played an Olympic White Fender Jazz Bass during their surf era.

My favorite is the mustang.
That's why I have three of them.
Very easy to play as they are short scale.
You can get a very decent sound out of them.
In my opinion they're very underrated.
Anyway, with the right strings in the right 'situation' they sound awesome.
I recorded half of the Kaleydoskop album with mustangs, the other half with Pete Curry's Precision. I wonder who can tell which tracks are recorded with the mustang.
Even Pete was surprised by how good they sound as he didn't expected that.
Our next 10" that will come up early this year, again, is recorded with a mustang... the white one on the pic as I had it with me on our last California tour.
I cannot recommend it enough. Mine are all japanese. I don't need a US made as these sound very fine for me, in particular with my bassman 100.
A tasty round 'soulbass-sound'. Big Grin

Cheers,
Andy

That is super cool!

Any bass on hand that has between 2 and 4 strings on it and does not have active electronics.

Seriously those vintage Japanese basses look sweet, especially the hollow Ibanez and Yamaha. I had a 70s Epiphone bass that looked a lot like that Yamaha on page 1. I sold it a while back to fund my Jazz bass. 2 active bass threads on the forum! This place is really starting to turn around. Smile

The Mosrite Bass always sounded pretty sweet to me...

And the '51 Fender Precision, of course...

the music master basses formt he 70's are pretty cool. they have a shorter scale and smaller frets so if you're a guitar player switching over or have tiny hands it works out great. the only problem with them is that they have a really thin sound. this is because of the fact that they just threw a cover on a mustang pickup and put it in. ive heard of people rewinding them or replacing them witha four pole heavy equivalent and having good results.

here's a recording of The Lively Ones with Ron Griffith on Mosrite bass:

here's a video of Point Doom with the re-issue CIJ 1951 Fender Precision bass. (switched out the pick-up with a Curtis Novak hand-wound and proper wiring and capacitor and pots)

Every once in a while the student after me brings his dad's bass to class. He let me play it one time and I used a pick. It sounded pretty good actually. Feels great sitting or standing. Looks amazing.

The last time I was there, a guitar store in Philly had at least one Dillion copy of this bass, in case anyone is interested.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

is your student's dad Paul McCartney? Or Bruce Foxton? John Enwistle?

Nope. Just some 14 year-old kid who's dad is a bass player with good taste. The kid's own bass is a Fender P-Bass, like this:

MIM P-bass......Chrome Red. Only thing I would consider changing is the fretboard. I love the look of maple.

I'd love a Yamaha SBV as well.

I've been threatening to do this for a year, and finally did. I chromed up my Squier VM Jazz Bass.
