Permalink COMPILATION THREAD

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

just wanted to make a thread with as many as possible surf-comps out there and which you guys think are good, have lots of otherwise unatainable songs etc.

I have
"Surf's up - 30 totally Awesome Surf Instrumentals"
"Toes on the Nose"
"Lost Legens of Surf guitar" I-IV
"Surf Monsters"
"Diggin' for gold!"
"Beyond the Beach"
"Surf guitar greats: one dozen surf-rock instrumentals"
"Rare West Coast Surf Instrumentals"

more? opinions?

I especially like comps for 1st wave stuff since it's an easy way to get access to otherwise rare and pricey 45s.

I had that as a poll option, "just for otherwise unattainable 45's and rare tracks", but it somehow didn't show up and I cant change it now Confused

just want to compile a list of good comps, really.

I like comps..."Beyond the Beach" is good.

I agree about 1st wave comps being a really good way to get your hands on hard to find stuff. I'm a little less warm to other comps though, but I guess I'm a hypocrite because I LOVE the old KFJC comps, of which I have all but one.

I like the sampler comps that Double Crown puts out with The Continental. Lost Legends is a really good series, too.

These are all cool:

Surf Legends & Rumors
The KFJC fundraising comps
Big Surf
Big Surf Hits
Surf War
Tokyo Eleki Battle
Locked Into Surf
Rare Surf Vol. 1-3 (which I think are the same as the American Surf Treasures comps)
Surf Creature
Surfer's Mood
Instro Nation
Wax, Board & Woodie

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Diggin' Out is also pretty cool. Wink

I really liked the Lost Legends series and the Dancehall Stringbusters stuff that are on Sundazed.

If you can find it, Guitar Player Presents: Legends of Guitar-
Surf. It's a great primer on the first wave. I'm sure it's out
of print. Rhino put it out before the "Cowabunga Box Set",
perhaps the ultimate compilation.

Man, I can't believe I forgot that one. Right now I'm doing something that closely resembles your avatar.

Yeah! both of those are great! for the early years of my surf music education - comps were about the only thing I could find - Ebay and the net has changed that. Very Happy

My favorite new comps are the sundazed lost legends discs - Esp. Vol. 1 .... When I first fired it up in the cd player, 10 seconds into "ElGato" I KNEW it was gonna be killer.

I need to reply to this thread, but considdering that I probably have over 100 surf comps. I need to look at them all to see which ones are woth mentioning.

But yeah I really like comps its a great way to find new bands, and to hear what they may sound liek without buying a whole cd.
and your pretty likely gonna like somebody on it.

so give me time.

I really dig some comps, and I'll say for the most part, I really like the idea of compilations in general.

Here are the ones I can think of off the top fo my head that I really am into:

Bikini World
KFJC Surf compilations
Surf Monsters
Charlie Does Surf
The Continental Compilations
Diggin for Gold
War of the Sruf Guitars
For A Few Guitars More
Jesus Christ SurferStar
Hair
Big Wave Riders
Kahuna Classics
Surf Legends and Rumors
Lost Legends of Surf Guitar I-IV
Surf's Up At Bonzai Pipeline
Wild Sanzami Beat 1&2

Wow... those are the ones I came up with off the top of my head.

~B~

Some more comps of rare 1st wave stuff not yet mentioned:

Surf Guitar Rumble (2 volumes)
Wax 'Em Down
Sleazy Surf (2 volumes)
Surfin' In The Midwest (4 volumes)
Everybody's Goin' Surfin'/Nobody's Goin' Surfin'
Waikiki Surf Battle
Surfin' Wild
Wail On The Beach
Boss Drag '64
Get A Board

After buying these in the 80s/early 90s it got out of hand, the rest is history...

Anyone know the story on KFWB's "Battle of the Surfing Bands" and similar items? Has it always been somewhat strangely but not entirely mislabelled as to content?

I make it:

1.1 Surf Party - Bruce Johnston
1.2 Surf Battle => Goofy Foot - The Lively Ones
1.3 Vesuvius => Pipeline - The Sentinals => The Lively Ones (?)
1.4 Surfin' Tragedy - Jim Waller & the Deltas
1.5 Soul Surfin' = The Soul - The Rhythm Kings
1.6 Driftin' - Dave Myers & Surftones

2.1 Get It = Every Night = Last Night - The Rhythm Kings
2.2 Tor-Chula => Hot Pastrami - The Impacts => The Lively Ones (?)
2.3 White Water - Dave Myers & Surftones
2.4 Ramrod - The Challengers
2.5 Revellion => Surfin' USA - The Biscaynes => The Lively Ones
2.6 Delano Soul Beat = The Charades

I may be wrong at points.
