DustyRoad wrote: What are the ones YOU play? What I play does vary depending on my mood. On a typical sitting it goes something like this: I warm up with Hawaii Five-0. Then the sequence varies, but includes. Pipeline, Penetration, Wipe Out, Flight of the Surf Guitar, Misirlou, Shake & Stomp, Blue Mountain, Twilight Surfer, Walk Don't Run, Surfside, Apache, Surf Party, Return of the Surf Guitar, Point Zero, Bulldog, Out of Limits, Surf Rider, Ghost Riders in the Sky (my own version that sounds like a cross between the Chantays and Dick Dale's versions). I also have a few songs of my own that go in the mix. Off hand, that list seems like a typcial play list for many of my sittings. Talk to you later, |

Being new to the surf scene I don't have much to add to what's already been mentioned. However, coming at surf from the outside - I got into "guitar-based instrumentals" first - I feel I would be remiss in not suggesting a few "not-as-surf" guitar instrumental-based bands, which include: The Shadows: Apache (already mentioned), FBI, Man of Mystery, Peace Pipe, Wonderful Land, Shadoogie, 36-24-36, The Savage (done by The Ventures with keys!), etc. Duane Eddy: Rebel Rouser, Cannonball, Ramrod, etc. Link Wray - at least Rumble Then of course there's all of the "one hit wonders" that were covered by many bands and either turned into surf versions by surf bands, or just tossed about amongst all the guitar-instro players: Peter Gunn theme. Then there's Freddy (Freddie) King if you want to push towards blues (or are already coming from that direction). Steve |

Also, the SG101 search function is a wonderfully useful tool for answering questions just like this--exactly like this--sometimes with discussions going back before SG101 even existed in its present form and with highly respected members of internationally-known bands. Here are just a few that should definitely help: Opinions For A First Wave Setlist Favorite Surf Band From the 60s? Essential Tunes Every Surf Guitarist Should Know How to Play —Insect Surfers |

I've found You tube to be a great resource in this respect, though I'll also say that something like Surf Rider or Mr. Moto never came up in my searches or suggestions and I was unaware of them until I found this site. Still, if you put in something like Pipeline, you're going to get a lot of the other popular surf/instro suggestions, and can follow from there. Steve |
