Hey guys and girls, I have been "playing" guitar off and on for a while. What I know, I taught myself, and it's not much. I have tried lessons a few times, but because of my job I can't go every week and I felt like I was being rushed to get stuff down for the next week. It was also just a dude having me memorize scales. I can buy a book and memorize scales on my own for the price of one lesson.

What I need is something/someone that will not only show me the scales, but also teach me some music and how those scales work to make music and how to also play solos without just playing the scale shape. I guess I need some theory to understand how it all works. I hope I'm making sense.

So, I would like to know what, if any DVD's you guys think would be good to start with. I would really like to get better at guitar, but there are so many options out there, it's hard to choose. Thanks.

Joe

Hi Joe. Welcome to SG101. Your question has been asked before, with mixed results. Meaning some people won't use them and others will. Here's some topics you can read to see some of what's already been discussed.

I think this will give you some ideas.

What many people have used for decades to learn to play surf music is just playing along with their favorite records. It must have been a lot harder back in the day. These days, computer programs let you slow down a tune to half-speed and slower while maintaining pitch. That helps a lot, as long as you can figure out the chords.

And, there's these.

I can't attest to any of these, but they are each a lot less expensive than a single guitar lesson, so there's not much risk.

All the best. Playing surf guitar is really a lot of fun.

Thanks, Noel. I did a search for DVD but didn't get any of those threads. I will definitely check them out. I wasn't looking for surf specific DVD's really, just some good theory lessons I guess. Thanks for the reply, every little bit helps!

Joe

Guitar theory? Why didn't you say so. This isn't cheap, but view the promo and decide if you want to give it a try. Again, I haven't tried it, but it might be just what you're looking for.
