Permalink Eddie Bertrand Update

I dread openning this thread every time because I'm so afraid of what will be in one particular post. But I've decided that, while I am profoundly sad by this and will sonn be much sadder, I also need to be full of joy that Eddie Bertrand lived at all and that he created so much of the music we love, and gave us all of himself when he played. He is truly one of a kind and an inspiration, and his music will always be with us. We are immeasureably better and happier for that. Thanks, again Eddie. For everything.

Just sent my message to you Tim.I really hope it makes it to his eyes or ears before it's too late. Cry

Reverb, It's A Way Of Life!

Nice visit with Eddie today. Paul Johnson & Rob Watson had just concluded a visit with Eddie as Frank Hughes and I were arriving. Frank and I took turns reading your emails to Eddie. Emails from Europe to Australia. From fans to people holding elected political office. Eddie was alert and appreciative for a time. As a new dose of pain medication took effect, he drifted off... We read a few more in hopes he would hear. I have placed everyone's emails plastic in a 3 ring binder so that they will be preserved for his family. All emails will be read to Eddie and placed in the binder for posterity for his family. Thanks to everyone who has written so far. Everyone has obviously put a lot of thought, emotion and love into their messages to Eddie.

I was thinking that very same thing when I opened the thread today. It is a tough time for the entire surf community.

Every time I look at the Eddie and the Showmen CD cover with him up on the Hollywood Bowl stage, axe in hand, looking all business and loads of swagger. That's the Eddie i'll remember

I've been watching and re-watching the video of Eddie playing Lanky Bones, and now I want to play along. Does anyone have a tab?

Eddie's performance from that day can be heard here starting at about 42:00 http://pastdaily.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/y-day-at-the-hollywood-bowl-1.mp3

at the first surfguitar101 convention i got to play on stage with paul johnson through eddies amp. i was terrified. in retrospect, how cool was that? eddie rocked the house that day.

Checked in on Eddie around noon. He was unresponsive. I'll go back later this evening. image

Has Eddie always been a Jag player?

My Jazzmaster already is a color match for his Jaguar. I'm seriously thinking of having my own Jag refinished in honor of Eddie.

Knowing Eddie, he would tell you to save your money and use it to go out and have a good time. image

That's a great picture of Eddie. Thanks so very much for sharing these with us.

Once again, please send your wishes directly to Eddie at eddieandtheshowmen@yahoo.com. All your messages go into a book I have placed next to Eddies bed. It is also helpful if you indicate what city, state and country you are from. Thank you.image

I've only met Eddie once so far and I'm sure he was as frustrated as we were.
We were planning on playing a few Eddie and the Showmen tunes with him at a SG101 convention and met at Kyle's parents house the day before to iron out the beginnings, ends, breaks and tempos. It was pretty clear from the start that his back was causing him a lot of pain. I was impressed with his playing and had hoped he would be able to play at the convention, but he just didn't feel up to it. He tried standing, sitting, leaning... but he just couldn't get comfortable.
I hope he can manage his pain and relax a little! The guy sure deserves better. Chin up amigo.

Tim, is this photo from the '86 South Bay Surf Reunion show? I remember Dan Forte reporting on it in the Guitar Player magazine at that time! Though I basically had no idea what surf music was, that article still made an impression. I remember Dan writing that Eddie emerged as the true star of the entire day, and played with a lot of fire and passion. I had a chance to see that show later on VHS tape, and he was absolutely right!

For an hour last night and an hour just now, I played as hard and fast and loud as I can (Texotica Reverb on 12/3.5/12 - always is), Quilter on 10, Strat on 10). Glass rattled, windows shook. Dogs barked. Pick melted. I hope Eddie could feel the reverb, the fury and the love.

Here is that Dan Forte review of the '86 South Bay Surf Reunion from the January 1987 issue of the Guitar Player magazine. Check out the nice things Forte and Paul Johnson say about Eddie: "Bertrand's performance was no less than amazing." "That day... he became the archetypal rock instrumental guitarist!" Very Happy Thumbs Up
