Don't pelt me with stones just yet. Since I got an offboard reverb unit, I've been basically putting it on everything I play live or with the band in varying degrees. I've actually become a bit gun shy to turn the thing off during a set because it might tweak the audience a bit, like "what's going on, that guitar sounds much different now!" kind of thing.
That being said, I really like a dry tone to get some of the cool woody quacks out of my strat.
Is verb an always on tool for you, or can you put her down cold turkey?

It's a big decision, one not to be taken lightly. Serious introspection prior to any attempts recommended. Start slow and back it down, if you start getting the shakes turn it back up and contact the authorities immediately!

I often play without it. Depends on what I'm doing. But if I'm going surfing, that's a different story!

Never fear, us SG101 counselors will advise you and set you straight 
Seriously....I've turned it down (I use a pedal thru mainly a Fender Twin) by only running the reverb on about 3 on the amp and turning the pedal off for a song or two, especially for more rock and roll numbers, but that's about it.

If they never meant it to be turned off, they wouldn't have added a footswitch. But if you don't want to be tempted to turn it off, just don't plug the footswitch in.

I turn my tank way down when doing most Ventures tunes...just doesn't sound right to me to have it cranked. Of course I play rhythm on most of the Ventures tunes we do so.....
Our other guitarist leaves his on medium all night no matter what!!

Made me think. As Ron said, lots of Ventures material is dry or nearly so. And the Shadows did't use reverb either. So I turned off my tank and started playing around with my other effects to see how lush a sound I could create. Just repeating C, Am, Dm, G rhythm progressions as if to something like Sleepwalk. Space Echo by itself with its' best tone? Not lush enough. Tremolo? Not right for this. My analog delay? Not lush enough either.
Then I turned on the Space Echo again but forgot to turn off the delay pedal that's in front of it in the loop. Wow! They aren't set to exactly the same speed or decay rate but both have a long decay. Together they create the most lavish and lush saturated sound I could ever imagine. It's like listening to an orchestra of guitars all at once. Incredible. I've never heard a chorus pedal come close to how amazing this sounds. Miles deep and the sound just wraps around me.
Anyone ever do anything like this?

I use a little delay pedal with the 'verb on my BF amps sometimes, just for a little slapback effect.

It's such a loaded question really....we all play the way we feel like and all have different views of what is the right way and wrong way but I really do reach down and turn the mix down a bit on some tunes because that's the way I do it and I sure don't expect anyone else to do what I do.

joking aside: i only turn it off for fuzzy stuff ( davie allan, spaghetti), where i use an echo-pedal and/or onboard reverb instead.

Some songs sound better without (he said, ducking behind a large object to avoid the stones that will be hurled)
Hank Marvin used echo instead and it sounds fantastic.
Some intricate passages are better defined with less or no Reverb but then again, there's a few songs on our record where I wish I had added more.

We have some tunes where I use echo instead of reverb on the guitar. Sometimes I forget to dial back the reverb before kicking in the echo and it's just too much effect for my ears.

NoisyDad, Our bass player is always laughing at me because I forget to turn the Reverb on or off (mix down) depending on the song. I always remember about 2 bars in.
I do the same with tremolo, LOL

I vary the mix and the dwell depending on the song, I usually keep the tone at 7. When I use slap-back delay on some tunes, I turn the reverb off, because the echo tends to get eaten up and lost in the verb.

95% of the audience won't hear the difference or care as long as the music is played well. Only the other guitar players in the crowd will hear anything different and have an opinion and even then, it is just their opinion. Play what sounds right to YOU.
