Pollo Del Mar - Year Of The Rooster *
Pollo Del Mar have become one of the most artful and supremely impressive surfbands of the modern era. Their music emotes stunning imagery via seasoned and fluid playing and exceptional arranging. It has been my pleasure to know these guys, and to host them live from time to time. This CD presents live tracks from four venues (The Pit at KFJC, the Blank Club in San Jose, California, the Muse in Kyoto, Japan, and N9 in Eeklo, Belgium. The many faces of Pollo Del Mar are here for your enjoyment. Don't be left out!

This is another stunning CD from PDM. The songwriting is top notch! The songs, to me, invoke all kinds of emotions and mental imagery. Great job!

The playing and song selections are fantastic. This is a great overview of the band.

The disc also comes with 3 quicktime video clips which are a total blast as well. Playing Wipeout with Nokie! Surf Party with Shigeo! And a performance of Insecticide with a little bit of Popcorn thrown in. Great fun!

Pick this one up along with their "Golden State" if you don't have it already. WOW!

I forgot about the videos and I haven't watched them yet. I need to get around to that. On the Golden State CD it took me 9 months to get around to watching the UBIK video.

Man, Surf Party sounds so good...

this cd is killer -

I should do a review, but here's the bottom line:

PDM's quality in songwriting and arranging, and ALL members' technical abilities need no further discussion - they'd allready shown all that with the studio-work, and it's well documented. but there are two things that nonetheless completly blew my mind when hearing Yo/t Rooster for the first time.

one. while PDM's studio playing is meticulous (sp?) and very impressive, - on this live album, the playing is meticulous, impressive AND inspired. less crafted, more played from the heart, as if they made the songs part of their emotional vocabulary rather than just their technical vocabulary. it's what sets live music apart from recording I guess, but the way they managed to capture that, and still play that well technically too, just hit me.

two. the scope of different sounds, atmosphere's they produced live is, to my ears, beyond what they did in the studio. to simplify the point: the prog-parts sound ore prog, the trad parts sound more trad. Just more differnet sounds and styles in their fingers (and Jeremy's fists, I guess Wink that too, for a live album, just wow.

admittedly, I don 't have that other live album so i don 't know whether that one has the same plusses, but anyway, a very well deserved 5star review!

(the video's however, hmm, I file 'em under memorablilia rather than under music. nice just because of the thought, but nothing more than that. cool bonus if nothing else)

Can't wait to get this. Ferenc, maybe send a few down to Go-Boy if possible??
But on a side note, that makes me happy. It seems that more and more people that are into Trad. only sounds are coming around to realizing that Pollo( allthough a very diverse sounding band) are a very talented bunch of Musicians and songwriters. I can appreciate that
some prefer Trad. over Progressive. I dig both equally.
But I always try to tell people. Even if your not into the style, listen to the
Band's plus sides. And Pollo has many Pluses and they keep getting better and better. Qudos to the growing crowd of admirers and to Pollo for the continued success.

Just listening to your awesome cover of Bells of St Kahuna on the way into work. How did you guys approach coming up with 2 guitar parts for this 1 guitar part song? In some spots I hear you each playing what Dave was doing in octaves (?). It was also really cool to hear you and Jono trade parts during the solo. Anything you can share here would be great.

Thanks.

In the verses, Jono is playing the chords implied by Dave. Where Dave goes to Octaves, Jono and I split the parts and double each other. In the original Slacktone arrangement, I really like how the solo part is a little more sparse than the verses, so I didn't want the rhythm guitar to chug along undereath. So, after I learned the solo, I ldivied the parts up between Jono and I. When we each do our parts, we hold the last note so it sustains through the other guys lines. At the very end of the song, I play a dry Johnny Ramone E/F slide, it just bangs the whole thing home with punk force, that again, was implied by Slacktone, but having a second guitar really cranks it up. "Bells" really is an amazing song in every way: writing, execution, power, drama- it would be impossible to best Slacktone's version, and we wouldn't bother trying. But, I hope we did add something to the legend of this great song.

Thanks for all the reviews everybody, keep em coming!

About the videos, yeah, memorabilia-- the audio largely stinks on them, but they were a lot of fun, so what the hell... Watch em once.

How long have you and Jono been playing together? I ask because you two really seem to be in synch with each other. That doesn't just happen over night. If you two didn't play together pre-Pollo was it rough going at the start or did you two click right away?

Not an answer to Jacobs question, but a bit of insight.
I've seen Pollo Del Mar many many times( even though they are a Nor. Cal. band) from 97 or 98 till Now. I think Ferenc and Jono keep getting better and tighter, as musicians and guitarists. Aging like a fine wine.

I decided to buck the trend and watch the videos first. "Surf Party" was especially awesome. There's really nothing I can add that hasn't been said already--start to finish, it's an amazing release. It's got a totally different feel (and setlist) than their earlier live album, too. You really need both of them.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Jono and I started playing toghether about a year before the first Pollo show, which was in '94. Our interplay has evolved over the years, but I always found him to be an incredibly intuitive player, always coming up with (more) interesting parts for songs I had written. The tightness really started to jell while playing Insecticide, where we would jam on patterns that absolutely turned the beat inside out and upside down, much to the frustration of the rhythm section who were attempting to find the "1". I always think of arranging for two guitars as 4 hands on one piano; really the whole band should be an octopus- eight arms, one brain.

Our girlfriends were friends and introduced us, we knew each other for a couple years before I found out he liked surf music, so we already had a grounded friendship before we started the band.

This is nice of Jeff to say because I know he has seen some really sh!tty shows of ours. As for the fine wine, it usually won't age much longer if we are around.

Wow, I hadn't seen that. If I was going to listen to vintage PDM, I'd listen to Tear of the Rooster. Thanks for posting!
