Permalink Chuck Berry and surf?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I was just wondering if anyone here thinks that a study of Chuck Berry is helpful to playing surf guitar specifically, or is it just good general R&R foundation.

He definitely had an influence on the Beach Boys.

I'd say so...! Boy they walked right into that one (the lawsuit, I mean).

I did some searching before posting, and there is relatively little mention of him around here compared to Duane Eddy or Link Wray as a "pioneer". I guess with the vocals and boogie inspired beat he belongs to a different branch of what became rock.

Someone did mention that the playing of Eddie Angel is almost all right out of the Chuck Berry book. But I know they aren't a surf band.

That's so spooky! I was just thinking the same thing a few hours ago. I looked up "Chuck Berry 2012" on youtube and found out he was still performing at the age of 85. Although he can't sing or play as well as used to, he speaks quite well.

In my opinion anyone who ever picked up a guitar to play rock music owes a little to Chuck Berry. He has to be the first real guitar hero.

He sorta pre-dated surf... defintiely a pioneer of rock'n'roll... but while there's affinities, he was into bending a lot more than surf usually involved

just some random & superficial thoughts

Chuck Berry influenced just about anybody that played rock and roll guitar in the 50s and early 60s including the early surf groups. He pretty much laid the blueprint for early rock and roll, period.

Chuck Berry is a rock'n'roll guitar god. How many shows does he play a year now?

Thanks for the responses, all. (well, most of them, anyway Shock ) He is definitely one guy whose "reputation" precedes him . . .

I took advantage of a great deal on some Chuck Berry dvd lessons. (A buy one/get one on a similar style Buddy Holly rhythm thing I wanted.)

Now, speaking of Holly, I definitely hear a Holly/Fire Balls thing via Petty Studios to the Bobby Fuller Four's few surf tunes.

He played on my Dual Showmen amp twice:) When you say "he can't play" you can't even imagine how bad he is. I was seriously questioning whether he even played on his own records. It was really embarrassing.

I'm still trying to erase the nasty pics I saw of him years ago out of my memory

I don't know if you have seen the movie, "Hail Hail Rock and Roll", but it basically documents Keith Richards' attempt to finally get a good sounding and playing performance of Chuck Berry on film. Since Berry would not allow anyone to adjust his amp settings, Richards went so far as to run Chuck Berry's signal to another, separate amp in the theater basement for recording (unknown to Chuck).

Berry was (is) Keith's hero, of course, and for years was disappointed with his sound and playing in his performances. He put together an all star caliber backing band and scheduled numerous rehearsals in order to showcase him in the best possible light and try to capture some of the early magic. Berry never seemed to appreciate what Keith was trying to do, or to understand why anything needed improving.

I've seen that movie. I vaguely recall Chuck wanting to change keys in the middle of a tune & Keith looked like he wanted to kill him.

Quoting Brian's quote "I need to do extensive reading on this complex subject before I give an educated opinion." -- Web comment that has never been made (Andy Borowitz)

I admire the mans work. Not so sure about the man himself. Need to watch the movie again and read some Brown Eyed Handsome Man pages.

I've seen parts of the movie on YouTube. What I witnessed was far from bad playing, it was catastrophe. At first I thought that they are doing soundcheck and that some roadie is hitting wrong notes. Next thing was Chuck Berry playing in wrong key, hitting wrong notes. For the first 5 songs he didn't do any good notes. None. Zero:) However, audience was having fun. I went after 15 minutes because it was painful to watch.
