Permalink Atmospheric Surf?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

I'm just getting into Surf music and trying to build my collection but I wanted to get some help from the experts out there. I'm looking for recommendations for Surf groups/albums that have an atmospheric, maybe soundtrack quality to them whether fast or slow. I'm looking for something other then what could maybe be considered the more straight ahead poppie, boogie, blues based stuff to something more progressive if that makes any sense? I have so far got albums from The Madeira, The Mermen, and The Insect Surfers and that stuff pretty much hits what I'm looking for. I have looked through numerous posts from the last few years and have some ideas but was hoping to get a few more. Thanks for the help.

I concur with the great recommendations above.

Not surf, but in the general vein of the Spaghetti Western genre is the band The Friends of Dean Martinez. Great atmospheric stuff. Highly recommended.

Bob

The langhorns are a great band to introduce surf to first time listeners.

Thanks all for the feedback. Looks like I've gota lot of listening to do to check these recommendations out. Big Grin

Check out Yawning Man too

Not Surf per say, but Modern Exotica with sometimes surfy guitar.

Agreed.

Langhorns and Bambi Molesters both, easy to listen to, hard to play.. unlike Eric Clapton! Laughing End of quote.
Actually, the Langhorns comment was the best i could do since i can't define "atmospheric" in musical terms.

Lanterna are a great one and they've also done a split with Scenic, who I'd wholeheartedly recommend, particularly the album Acquatica.

Explosions In The Sky are great, and there's actually a whole lot of similar post-rock/crescendo-core that might be what you're looking for. In a lot of ways, I feel like those bands (Mogwai, Tarentel, This Will Destroy You) are the modern heirs of surf, in the sense that they're exploring atmosphere in a more or less "pop" context.
