It could also be a case of needing some new tubes, or your amp needing biasing. A couple of years ago I had to take my amp into a repair guy that wasn't my usual guy, and he biased my amp too cold. It sounded lifeless, my regular repair guy got it back to where I like it with the turn of a screw...

might worth a try: turn the amp way up as indicated, and turn your guitar volume down. i tried that a few days ago and it opened up alot of great tones that i never thought i could get out of my jaguar. got some HUGE sounds with my volume knob at the lowest possible and picking fairly heavy.
