The few that I have mentioned would be an 'always on' thing for me. I used to incorporate a Boss GE-7 into the effects loop on my old Marshall setup. It would really bring my tone to life.

How about the FUlltone catalyst? Anyone play with one? Seems versatile non_- compressing variable-q boost with clipping to fuzz levels. GC dudes don't know how to explain its functions
It's a great all-arounder IMO. I thought it excelled as a boost, and it is actually quite similar to the Fat Boost 3 when used this way. Both pedals have that glassy FET crunch. The Catalyst sounded cool with the gain cranked too, somewhere between distortion and fuzz.
It isn't 'variable Q' though, so you can't adjust the frequency bands that the EQ knobs control, but the EQ works well. Having the mids ganged to the bass knob is kind of odd, but it was voiced well enough. Just a nice low mid bump if you want it.
It is somewhat of a 'jack of all trades master of none' type deal, but all of its sounds are useable. The FD2 is my favorite fulltone boost/OD however.

I never thought any pedals were necessary in my rig until I gave some good ones a chance- after seeing that most all you guys use a few it seems. Jag>Danelectro EQ>Boost pedal> '67 Bandmaster. -
I was afraid of coloring my tone too much but learning of the GOOD pedals through you folks really brought my tone to life!
It seems like when it comes to Boosting your signal all the boxes mentioned previously do the trick (bbe, xotic etc..). But I am surprised what a nice boost I also get from the cheapo Dano EQ

Going to the true problem the poster posed in this thread... He is concerned that his Deluxe is at 7 at practice so he wants a boost pedal.
1.) Boost pedals don't create volume. Turn your amp up to 10 and step on a boost pedal, what happens? Maybe tone coloration, but you get no additional volume.
2.) So, getting a boost pedal is essentially turning his amp up to 10 in this case. Boost pedals are great for when you cannot get to your volume knobs or like to use them as a pre-amp of sorts. But create magic volume, they will not.
3.) Practice at the volume you play at, especially for a surf band. You don't want to be surprised by new tone caused by turning up louder at gigs. And you know where each bandmate needs to be volume wise at a gig setting. no more guessing, lock it in at practice. Tweak slightly to fit the venue.
