I just purchased an early-sixties German-built Klemt Echolette tape/tube echo unit - exactly like the one that the Atlantics (and the Denvermen) used in the sixties! I have been wanting one of these for a looooong time. Get this: their usual range on eBay is $600-900 (probably cause of some tenuous Beatles connection). I just got mine through Buy It Now for $200!!!!!!!! It's of uncertain working condition, but for that money, I can dump as much as it'll take to fix it and still be way ahead. And it might just be working, who knows.
Anyway, nothing sounds like an Echolette. The echo settings that thing has are completely unique. I'm thrilled. This is gonna rule!

Congrats! Looks really cool and hopefully it will also work properly. I think I'll give my Denvermen CD a spin later.

Thanks, Klas. Now I have to track down somebody that repairs tape echo units - do you by any chance know of anyone? My big worry is that the motor is burned out. if that's the case, then I'm out of $200.
BTW, I really like the Denvermen. Awesome stuff, I've listened to them a lot lately while slowly reading the History of Australian Surf Music by Stephen McParland....

Sorry, don't know about anyone who repairs tape echoes, at least not in the U.S.
And yeah, the Denvermen are really good I think and I'm currently reading Surf Music U.S.A. by Stephen McParland!

How did an Australian band end up named the Denvermen?

:ot:How did an Australian band end up named the Denvermen?
Or the Atlantics, for that matter??
Checking McParland's encyclopedia again, it's really not a very good story. The band started off backing a singer by name of Paul Dever, and the name the Denvermen was chosen because it sounded close to Dever.
However, I heard the Atlantics say that they benefited greatly from not having an Aussie sounding name since the DJs refused to play Aussie bands, thinking they would be inherently inferior to American r&r acts. Some DJs told the Atlantics that the only reason they played their records in the beginning was because they figured they were an American band.

Maybe they were Bob Denver groupies?
Cool score there, Ivan!

Back in the old days in Portland, Greg Sage of the Wipers was the local tape echo guru. He usually used echoplex, but would fix anything like this. The last time I saw him, it was in Tempe, AZ where he now lives. You can try contacting him here: wipers@zenorecords.com If he know longer does it, he might know the right guy. He's really nice.
If anyone doesn't know the Wipers early albums, I highly recommend them. Portland's first punk band, with really cool guitar sounds-all tube amps, tube mics, and tube boards. No solid state allowed . Not hardcore, the good stuff. Melodic and all.
Congrats Ivan! Can't wait to hear the results!

Ive got an Echoplex Ep-3, a Roland Space Echo RS-301 (w/chorusm the one used by Brian Setzer) and a WEM Copycat tape echo. It's addictive!!
I love Echorette's just from the looks/mechansim /aesthetics but it doesn't seem like a very usable device in practice (very complex). More of a museum piece .

WOW! I just got mine from eBay for 70GBP - that's around 136USD or 176AUD! Is that a bargain or what? I've never seen one go so cheap and I was the only bidder. Weird eh? I have only plugged it in and tested it <u>without</u> signal ins/outs. All the valves (tubes) light up, including the magic-eye; the motor runs at both speeds and is mechanically quiet. It's filthy inside and has a dangerous 2-pin German mains connection (someone has actually soldered a 2-core cable to the mains input!). I intend to fit a Euro socket with earth (ground) as it's dangerous to use them without it at 240 Volts! 2 of the ECC83 sockets are hanging loose but still functioning. I'll fit new ones and check out all the wiring as well as give all the mechanical parts a clean & lube. I'll take some photos in the daylight and post them. It makes a nice companion for my Dynacord Echocord Super 62, The Binson Echorec B1, and the Binson EC3! I'm a greedy bugger ain't I? I have a few rack echoes too like the Zooms RFX2000 and 2200, a Quadraverb GT, an Art SGX 2000 Express and an Art SGE Mach II. I won't mention the Zoom 508 pedals or you'll all get jealous! I am a collector of echo units!

It's not here yet, Wannes. I contacted the seller a few days ago, and he apologized for the delay. It should be here in the next couple of days. However, it won't be working on arrival, that has been established. So, I'll have to get it fully serviced, and maybe even some parts replaced -and getting parts for something like this - well, let's just say, good luck to me! The saga is only beginning.... I hope it'll be worth it.

Ivan:
I've had a couple of Echolettes but prefer the Dynacord Echocords (currently have 3 Echocords) - the two units are quite similar
if you'd like to converse on the subject of these please email me - I do have an eccentric guy here in Boulder, Colorado who will work on them

Dear Graylion:
you only need to have one device in your rig grounded - so if your amp (or reverb unit or stomp box) has a 3 prong plug, you don't need to ground your echo - it will be grounded through the shield of your interconnect cables.
In fact it's advisable to only ground one thing to avoid hum causing ground loops
