Permalink JBL K140 for surf?

New Topic

I got me an old Matamp 15" cab and now looking at speakers for it. I'm playing with a Hiwatt which i recently acquired.

I'm in the UK so haven't got wide availability for JBLs, and most of the D130s i;ve seen are reconed with some random British cone.

Anyone use a K140? is it a bass speaker? will it cover the top end?

I could use some 12s instead but I've always wanted to finally play through a 15"

Thanks

It's a speaker made for bass-guitar. Usually the frequency around 2-3khz will be suppressed and a little more flat. I have seen on 15" made for guitar the frequency curve in that area is emphezised like in this Eminence :

yeah, i think you're right. gonna pass on that. Will wait for a flat cone k130 or d130

I don't know how the K140 compared to the D140, but I have one in my Showman with a tone-ring cabinet and I love it. I use it for bass or guitar and it's sounds great either way. I also have a D130 in a cab and to tell you the truth, I can't really tell a difference. I can adjust the tone on my reverb unit and on the amp to level things out the way I want them.

Yes, I have a D-130 and a D-140 in mine. Sounds fantastic.

I've got a Celestion Truvox 15" in a pine cab for my Dual Showman. Sounds good, clear and not prone to ice pickiness like a lot of speakers. Don't forget, the D130 was designed to handle high power, not specifically for it's tone which was appreciated later. Today there are plenty of speakers that can handle the power, and unless they are specifically designed for a certain task (like sub-bass for instance), then they are likely to do the job. I often get complimented on my 'beautiful tone', but really it's just a clean guitar with some reverb - not very common in this town! Oh, and 6L6's, of course!

thanks for the heads up. i just wanted to avoid suppressed highs which you can get with some bass speakers. The 140s actually seem more common around Europa
