Permalink surf medley tunes?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

the group i've been playing with have decided to add a surf medley (yeah!) to our set list. we're playing a varied set list to keep the 30 to 50 year old ladies dancing, which worked perfectly for us on our maiden voyage last weekend. anyway......i don't want to do the WDR/pipeline/secret agent medley so many people do and it's got to be something up-tempo. i was thinking about 'penetration' but can't think of something to blend it in to. i don't want to wander to far off the beaten path with something too obscure. any ideas? i had thought of a 'WDR' segue into 'wipeout' but that's as far as i got. .......i hear a collective groan at the mention of 'wipeout', but this isn't a surf show and people do recognize it.

As Much as I am not a fan of it, there is always the Ventures Medley,
WDR,Perfidia,Lullaby of the leaves, etc.....

yeah, i thought of it but i'm trying to stay away from that one too. i like 'penetration' because it is more bass driven but can't think of anything to blend it in to.

Penetration, Pipeline, Baja,

good luck making them into a Medley.

Every time I play Jon & the Nightriders Surf Beat '80 I think any three or four tunes in a row would make a great surf medley. Ever notice how the tunes seem to flow from one to the next as if they were short movements of a surf concerto?

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

You could use Junior Brown's surf medley for ideas. Some of those ideas you have already rejected, though. Smile

I'd link to a youtube video, but he changes it up a lot, so you might have to listen to a few.

use the ventures Walk Don't Run, Perfidia, Lullaby of the leaves medley.

One of the greatest mash-ups I know of is Susan & The SurfTones doing Walk, Don't Run/ Jezebel. It was released on a Point Break magazine compilation disc. If I was all internet smart and stuff, I'd email you a copy to listen to. Great disc, by the way! Well worth adding to your collection if you can dig up a copy.

How about:

Outer Limits (Em) - Penetration (F#m) - Diamond Head (Am)

I think all the songs mentioned stand on their own and are worthy of a single play.

I generally dislike medleys...especially Surf medleys.

ooh, i like the idea of penetration and out of limits. since we aren't a surf band and i am a minor player i don't have much say but thanks for all the ideas.

I’m surprised somebody here remembers that! The comp was called “Smells Like Surf Spirit“. We never got around to a second volume. Gee-Dee had trouble finding a new distributor.

Jezebel! I am so adding that...

Carol, I think you're looking for things that will be instantly recognizable by a non-surf audience (not least your band mates), so some of this might not work, except where you can use less familiar material attached to something more familiar, like Pipeline or Penetration.

Susan Yasinski does (did, long ago) a WDR-Jezebel "medley" (more of a mash up) that I kind of liked. She treated Jezebel (not really the surf version) as a kind of bridge for WDR. Her WDR was a bit different, I think to accommodate the pairing.

As far as something a little different, how about Pressure (Pyramids) & Tide Pool Q (Torquays)? (Idea stolen, sort of, from the AquaSonics, who, however, don't play them together.) I think Pressure goes pretty well with Penetration, too as far as that goes. (No joke intended, damn it.) Or Point Panic (Surfaris) and Goofy Foot (Lively Ones). Maybe Tube City (Trashmen) and Banzai (Chantays). Or the Chantay's Monsoon (somewhat reminiscent of Pipeline) might fit with Ghost Riders in the Sky.

I think the things that poison medleys for most people are that they often partner songs that don't fit together well (leading to awkward transitions) while simultaneously suggesting that none of the material is really worth a full independent play anyway. The more awkward transitions there are, the stronger the suggestion that the material is only worthy of a brief glance. In which case, why play it, of course!

TV themes done in surf style? Hardly original but are usually recognisable.

The Beloved Invaders' "Spy Set" is Secret Agent Man, James Bond Theme, Peter Gunn, Get Smart Theme, Hawaii Five-O, which never fails to please. They just play all five songs in a row. Not a medley. They have a sort of Space Set comprised of Journey to the Stars and Out of Limits. That also gets a good reception, though I suspect most people aren't quite sure what they are hearing.

In the Royal Aces, we've had good results with an instrumental medley of Memphis/Bo Didley/Wham, which is quite a high energy mix.

I was going to say Pater Gunn/James Bond. aka the spy set, until now I thought it was my idea. i'm off to listen to some invaders.

Penetration would flow beautifully into High Tide and then into Creepy Crocker(OK, it isn't exactly surf, but it's awesome and would make a killer ending!) Penetration is kinda slow, picks up speed with High Tide then finds another gear with Outer Limits and opens up the warp drive coils with Creepy Crocker. THAT would be a jaw dropping medley! Sign me up for a copy when it gets to CD!

There is an interesting medley of "Surf Softly & Carry a Big Board" (Astronauts) & "Storm Surf" (Surfaris). It is on the Aquasonics "Play Song's For The Surfin' Set" CD (on Wormtone records). They work really work well together (IMO). Also, in the early 80's, Jon & the Nightriders have an LP called "Charge of The Nightriders" with a medley called "Splashback" (there is also a different 12" vinyl "single of "Splashback" featuring a different recording). Then: Davie Allan & the Arrows put out "Stoked On Surf", also a medley of many surf instro's. You can find the actual song listings on Phil Dirt's "Reverb Central" site...(www.reverbcentral.com). I only posted this as "suggestion's", cos' there are so many that would work well together. Many years ago, a band I was in did "Spanish Spinner", which was actually our medley of "The Wedge/Malaguena/Miserlou" . (It worked good & we did real well with it in a "battle of the bands"). Good Luck & please tell us what you finally decided on "medleying".
