Just my 2 cents:
Stay away from cheap guitars with a whammy! You won't get happy...unless you spend lots of money for improvement.

The Dead On 67 is actually a very cool guitar that I wish I had kept. However, the trem was pretty much useless and looks really cheezy...and not cool cheezy

Jep, a friend of mine also bought one and it's impossible to stay in tune when you use the whammy. It's a nice guitar...with a downside.

The Hicadoolas

I agree about the whammy, tried one in Guitar Center years ago and the thing was basically a regular Dano bridge with a metal knife screwed into it lol, almost like someone did a homemade mod to it in their garage. But otherwise the guitar looked really cool.

+1 on the whammy.

I have a U2 reissue that is a solid guitar with great tone and playability. I doubt that I've ever gotten more bang-for-the-buck on any instrument / equipment purchase. I love those lipstick pickups, and the hollow body sound.

I always found it interesting that Glen Campbell used Carol Kaye's Fender Bass VI to record Galveston/Witcheta Lineman; yet when it came to getting his own six string Bass, he went with a Danelectro!
Cool

Carol Kaye comments on this in the documentary "The wrecking crew", saying Glenn picked up her Dano six string bass wich she had at the time, doing the solopart on Witchita Lineman, not a Fender Bass VI. I see in clips that he's "wearing" a Bass VI in preformance but the recording was done with a Danelectro.

I'm very close to picking up a 66' Convertible myself these days, trying not to but it seems to got me haunted. Big Grin

I might be getting a Silvertone 1448 amp in case model. Never played one but they look like a cool cheap garage rock/blues guitar that doesn't need to be babied. Not expecting much from the amp, as it is low powered and from Youtube vids doesn't sound great, but the guitar is the main thing. The 2 pickup versions are way beyond what I want to spend, even though they are more versatile. There's something cool about taking a single lipstick guitar and making it work. The silver sparkle on black paint finish is awesome, as is the funky canoe paddle headstock.

First I have to disagree with Jake's comment about saving up for a better guitar. Rick Miller's use of his old Danelectro for the past 20 years in SCOTS is proof enough these guitars are about all you need. Same with Dexter Romweber. But those were vintage.

I've had an old late 90s MIK '59 DC RI since it was new. It's set up for slide. Not a bad guitar. I recently picked up one of the new '59 originals. They updated a few of the inaccuracies of the older models and I think they got it closer to the originals. That said, that guitar is currently on eBay. I picked up a Silvertone '66 1457 and it blows away the reissues in feel, tone, and playability. It's in almost mint condition and came with the original case(also in excellent shape). It was 100 bucks more than a new reissue. You can't beat that.

tubesNtweed, FWIW, My 1448 hangs quite respectably with my full scale Dano/Silvertones. It sounds very, very good. The short scale can take a minute to reckon with but after that minute it's all good.

Well, I could not resist any more and took home the Convertible 66 today. It,s near mint with just some small wear on the neck, actually from where it get's neck-support while laying in it's org. hard case. My guess is that it's just been in there, probably for the past 45 years? No signs of fret wear etc., vinyltape on the ends in pristine white condition. Unplugged it sounds much like those pre-war folkies, probably well suited for slide/blues picking and excellent for light travel and unplugged hotelroom playing. Got that Velvet Underground/60's garage vibe as soon as I plugged it in, a bit dark/mellow sounding with almost no sustain, I really enjoyed to play it with slow tremolo, huge charachter to the sound. Playability, neck and fret are excelente, but like most of the Danelectro's I've tried it got some kind of an overall fragile feel. Changed the stock tuners right away and will probably modify gently or even swap the bridge/trapeze to increase the sustain a bit, giving it better contact with the top, there is almost no contact at all today, just three tiny adjustment screws. It's not a beauty, the material used being the same as my Granmother's kitchentable back in the day, we call it Respatex over here. Anyway it's already proven to be very versatile and I already believe this to be a keeper. Big Grin

Saw this one on eBay. Way more than I paid, but it sure looks terrific in Purple Sparkle! Here.

Rudi,
Congrats on the Convertible. I've been thinking about a new bridge/tailpiece combo on mine for a while and though I haven't done it yet I've got a few ideas. I may even add an internal bridge block.
Either way, they are fun guitars. Mine sits in our living room with a '56 Danelectro amp with killer Tremolo and the two together are wonderful in a weird, vibey way.
Not everyone's cup of tea but here's one being used in a cool way with Trem.

Thank's Noel!
The colored ones are the reissues, do not know how they acts. Equally hard to find over here as the American made though.

Thank's! I'm very interested in your ideas here, I think there is alot more potential in the guitar but I will try to the most keeping the Danelc. aesthetics, making it a bit tricky using tailend trapeze, wider bridge (archtop/Gretsch style etc.) Think my first mod. simply will be leveling the bridge with a baseplate of bone cut out and sanded like the bridge instead of the screws, at least allowing the entire bridge to be in contact with the top. (Probably not that much of a difference, but a start.) Installing sound posts (not glued) f.ex. under the bridge (violin style) is another easy reversible mod.

A Pro 1 is the holy grail for me. My pal had one, lent it to his nephew and has not seen it since. The reish may be where it's at for me.

Pro 1's are cool.
I keep an original hanging in my wife's office to strum on now and then, plus it looks incredibly "correct" in our 50's ranch house. It's a brilliantly simple design and works well. They only made them for one year.
The reissues are cool too, as they have the longer scale and two pickups.
