So we booked a gig at a venue where volume is an issue or can be. Even my Fender Vibroverb is a bit much for this place. So I started researching small combos for gigs like this and I also wanted something versitile as I occasionally venture out into other genres.
I use a Roland Cube 30 for rehearsal and home practice and have generally been impressed by the bang for the buck. I talked to a few folks, read a bunch of reviews and pulled the trigger on a Roland Cube 80XL.
I used it on-stage Friday, Saturday and will again tonight. I'll have to say overall this amp does a good job!
- Plenty of volume with some to spare. I ran it on about half-volume (Black Panel setting)
- Good onboard reverb settings. It has both spring reverb & plate. Of course for most songs I had it on spring reverb. Yes it will drip, but not like a tank.
- Built in tuner.
- 12" closed back speaker really projects. It also has an ext. speaker out (haven't used it yet, but I do have a 1x10" cab and will try).
- Lots of other amp modelling settings.
- Usable effects. I used mostly the reverb, but also used delay and tremolo. Tremolo is lacking compared to my Fender, but I really didn't expect it to be a match.
- It has way more bells, whistles and settings than I need, but hey!?
- Purchased it online for $325 ($379 - 15%)
- One hand carry, about 35lbs.
- The overall tone is pretty good in my hands. Less dynamic / creamy than my VVRI though. Did the audience pick on this....nope.

sweet review!
Do you still have it?
What is your long term review when compared to the initial honeymoon stage?

Dude, I just picked up one of those!! Spring reverb is usable, some drip but not like a tank. Tremolo is OK, the rest I don't use. Light! Loud with a good tone, decent bottom set on the floor. I use the JC clean a lot and the DynaAmp setting. The Black Panel is good and so is the Deluxe. I'd like to run it thru a 1-15 ext. speaker.
Sold my Mustang III after I got this. May not be as versatile but it's stronger in the sounds I generally use. And lighter!

That is a Crosman 760 bb/pellet gun. I shoot cottonmouths with it. They live in the canal out back and come up into the patio and breezeway. I leave the other snakes alone. Got in the picture by accident. It has set right there for 2 or 3 weeks. Got used to it being there.
If anyone has a problem with it, let me know and I'll take down the picture.

lionman80--I got mine thru the same sale as you!! From MF. Not my favorite place to shop but I could not pass up the price. Nice guitar too!
My Cube 80 is not a XL model. It's a GX model. I don't really know the difference but there is no extension speaker jack.

Yes, too good a deal, but if I can get the setup just right I'll be golden. I have a low E buzz that I cannot seem to fix. Mine also has a space where the neck bolts on, but for $200 not bad.

Mine was well setup. I tried 4 springs in the tremolo and decided to go back to 3, too tight with 4. Adjusted the pups and changed strings--ready to go! IvanP posted a pix of the Surf Coasters guitarist with one of 'em.

Love me some iron sights, .22 .30 or pellet although an injury from an assault a few years ago has impaired my accuracy I'm sad to say.
Those Cubes look pretty nice and efficient.
Cheers,
Jeff

I've since downgraded to a Cube 40. Sold the 80 model. It was actually more power than I needed. Great units for the $$$ and both have a good digi spring reverb.
