Permalink Jaguar bridge pickup height

New Topic

So I recently did some tweaking/painting on my Jag, then put it all back together. It sounded great except for the bridge pickup. Ugly icepick tone. Then I noticed - it was set lower than usual. That thing needs to be cranked up really close to strings to sound good.

This ever happen to you? I also like Jazzmaster pickups up very close to the strings. They come alive up there.

I'm no expert and i only just learned this from youtube.

Adjust the pickups down as far from the strings as possible. Lay the guitar on something soft and support the neck with a small cushion. Tune up with a digital tuner keeping it attached for the next part. Raise a pickup and watch the tuner to see how the magnets affect the strings. Try to find a happy medium.

For me I don't like the sound until the bridge pickup is almost touching the strings.

I found, on my 1963 Jaguar, that if the pickups are too close to the strings, false tones, odd harmonics and noises appear..specially on the bass strings.

All pups get in my way when they're too high....specially the bridge!
