drum cymbals and tom questions

I cant find any place to find out if some of the bare bones drum kits used a 12'' tom or 13'' or 14'' or if the cymbal was a crash/ride 18'', or a 20/21/22'' ride. Top

If you look at pics of 1st wave surf bands you'll see everything from brand new Ludwigs with 12 and 13 double ride toms to old Radio King kits with one 13 with tacked bottom heads. Cymbals we're still on the smaller diameter side but the standard 14in hats with 18-20 in rides were in play for sure with some using smaller 12 or 13in hi hats and rides as small as 15in. Ride Cymbals were mostly thinner than the thick "rock" or "ping" types you see today. They gave that washy sound and are more suited to dynamic playing. I other words you can build a nice crescendo on a thinner ride. Iâd say a typical kit for the era was: 22in Bass 13in and 16in toms 14in hats and 20in ride. I'm a drummer but I play mostly swing and jazz on the tubs. I'm a terrible straight beat drummer. In the Surf Genre I play guitar. Maybe some of the surf drummers can chime in here with what they are using and why? — The Thunderchiefs Top

Yea ive seen some new wave surf pics of current bands with bare bones kits and lots of the older trad band pics but no dimensions so thanks alot for the info. Im kind of new to the whole drum size=type of music you should play rule of thumb. Top
MikeG Joined: Mar 29, 2006 Posts: 309 Springfield, Oregon	Posted on Apr 10 2006 11:40 AM I used to drum with the Secret Surfers (which later became the Brainwashers) I play a '71 Ludwig "Standard" kit with a 22" bass, 13" tom, 14" floor tom, 22" A. Zildjian medium ride, 14" high-hats (a wierd mismatched pair using a really light Ludwig-branded top and a heavier Zildjian bottom) a 14" "Tyrko" light crash (really bright and short), and a 14" Zildjian medium crash (darker and longer, it makes a good counterpoint to the other crash). I recently switched to Aquarian heads and I've been liking them a lot. Here's a pic of me playing back in the old Secret Surfer days. image Top
