Tell your friends that they are going to be in a surf band with you. If you write some songs and teach them the parts, then they might have fun. |

not very intersting story... we had to quit the old band (punk&hardcore stuff) because our drummer moved to another city. but - lucky me - just by that time i read a post somewhere in the internet that some guys im my area are looking for a guitar to continue their already existing surf band. so I started practicing surf tunes - what i didn´t before, I listened to surf music from time to time but never really thought about playing it - Now, on saturday and sunday we play our second and third gig together with a 1,5h (28 songs) set of traditional tunes, that I have all learned since january. It´s been tough but mostly great fun... here´s a first try of a promotion photo: |

We're a bit far from each other, but we could always do something via the OhmStudio that's mentioned in the other thread. I've just messaged my old drummer to tell him that he's my new drummer. Last edited: Jun 27, 2012 18:33:53 |

...in May of this year I got an email on my band page from a drummer at the beach. He and his guitarist just quit their '60s cover band and decided they want to play some surf. He did a search and found me and really liked what we were doing. With Ellie now full time focused on high school senior year and onto college, the three of us decided to give it a go. We started practicing and went on a search for a female bass player in an attempt to add that cool dynamic. We found three, all extremely good bass players...all gorgeous, but despite seemingly sincere interest they couldn't make it work. Last week, we found another old dude bass player who actually has played in some surf bands in other places. Our first practice with him is tonight. The three of us had a couple practices now at the infamous Warehouse Studios here that started back in the 60s. (Some say Skynard recorded Freebird there, and though they played there many times that's not true. I think you'd get stoned if you could smoke a small piece of the wall of this place.) It's now run by some young and very talented Indie artists who also own Skinny Records. All we are playing so far are a few of my tunes and some Bambi Molesters stuff, but these kids are blown away. They start to gather in herds, like they've never heard Jazzmasters and reverb. They all come over to look at and touch the tank. It's pretty funny actually. The cool thing is they want us to play with them on their bills when we're ready at the indie clubs downtown. So, we're going to focus on current surf tunes and eventually all original, and play it for the hipsters (although they get pissed if you call them hipsters) at the cool new clubs downtown. So, this band started in July of 2012. No name yet. —Shoot the Pier on Bandcamp My Country EP ... Florida Dirt Fire My French Love Songs ... I really needed a change... |

Well, just to update you. I live in England and Im the lead guitarist in a surf Band. I took Jakes advice. Got a mate around today who plays rythm guitar. Weve just had 4 hours of playing, hes very good and really likes the surf. Hes got a great driving sound, not just a series of strummed chords. He said hes in. We will be doing some songs too that we think will fit. J Kid and the Pirates shakin all over, that sort of thing. You couldnt get away with a purely instrumental band around here, too specialized. anyhow, it gets better, while playing he started singing too so that may be the songs covered. It gets better still, I had a few tunes on Saturday night with a lad who plays bass. He too loves the surf style and wants to be a part of this venture and guess what? He said he would like to sing and do bass at the same time. It gets better too, i have a drummer interested who wants to have a go when we have done some practice and got a few tunes together. You may not believe it but here is the icing on the cake. I will give you all one, yep just 1 guess as to what turned up in the post this afternoon. An item I won on ebay. Go on, what do you reckon would cap off my surfalisious day today! |

Poor ole WoodyJ forgot a couple of key points in the story about the beginning of "The Mariners". Our first drummer was a freshman cheerleader named Donna. A dadgum good drummer and sure looked better than us three hairy-legged guitarists. We actually did start out as "The Mariners", we began as "The Jaguars"... named because of Woody's recently (then) acquired Fender Jaguar (it turned pink on him.. another funny story). Our first real gig was a big talent show, where we somehow managed to kick the butts of the premier band in the area at the time. Our name changed with the launch of the Mariner IV satellite in the mid '60's. Woody got my first guitar right but I didn't own a Fender then (Mom and Dad couldn't afford it) so my second guitar and the one I played with through the rest of high school and college was a triple pickup semi-solid body Silvertone. Still have that guitar too. Dang those were great days!!! And thanks for the awesome topic. Sure brings back a ton of memories. —Ron (ToneBoy) |

Well how do you top this guy ^ haha, I have only been playing surf music for about 4-5 years now. I was in surf band called the "Crashmatics" which consisted of me, my dad, my brother in law and my uncle. We put out some tunes and an EP for fun. But, the older fellas knew we wanted to take it further and we soon branched out. I hooked up with a buddy of mine (last June) who is a studio percussionist and is quite amazing at drums and I already had 6 songs wrote. Which included the drums, bass, guitar, everything so we just needed to rehearse it and put it together. At the time my brother in law was busy with life, so the drummer and I stuck together and continued to write new stuff and kept rehearsing weekly. Finally towards the end of the summer my bro in law says hes ready and we began rehearsals at his house which is where we rehearse still. We still rehearse weekly and were almost done with a full length album that is all original material. Currently we rehearse once a week and have been doing an average of 1 show a week since spring. So things have picked up tremendously rather quickly for us. The unfortunate thing is, we are from the Detroit area and there is little to no surf scene up here. So a more progressive surf rock band shows up, it actually draws a lot of attention and we've had nothing but positive responses out of crowds at every venue so far. So thats a bit of a confident booster when your in a 3 piece instrumental band. Best thing to keep doing is keep playing, keep writing, and have fun. Knarle Tidehttp://www.facebook.com/knarletide |
