Crazy! I found this because of a post someone made in the Facebook Insto-surf group. Not surf, but totally worthy of getting posted here.

Tikitena wrote: My jaw dropped at 1:25 in that first video. And this one at 0:45 is similar, but dryer. I wonder if those are flat wounds. I've never heard a Stratocaster get that dead percussive "thunk" like that. Anyway, play those passages through a Showman and a tank and how is it distinguishable from Surf music? Just amazing. I wonder if this is a case of Dick Dale's influence coming back home to the middle east, or Omar being influenced by the Shadows and simply adapting it to the music he knows best? |

If you can find them Omar's "Guitar El Chark" and "Rhythms From the Orient" are definitely worth picking up! |

Awesome Kristena! Omar Khorshid has had a big influence on my playing and songwriting for sure. IMO, he is ridiculously under appreciated in the west. Though, in the Arab world, he is considered one of the greatest. His playing is just mesmerizing and beautiful. His style is completely unique to him. You can instantly recognize him after a few notes. He had a pretty incredible and tumultuous life that came to such a tragic end. Like Fritz said, for anybody seeking out his work, the Guitar El Chark compilation on Sublime Frequencies is simply amazing and pulls together some of his best work. After hearing that album, you will want to seek out more from him. As an aside, I'd also highly recommend Sir Richard Bishop's Freak of Araby record, which contains several Khorshid songs that I don't think anybody else could pull off. The entire album is an hommage to Khorshid. Omar Khorshid Appreciation Thread —Ryan Last edited: Mar 31, 2012 10:19:14 |
