Just received a promo from Prymaxe, passing it along - Eko Guitars in stock. That's a good store, I've done business with them.

I'm a fool for Gold sparkle...

Ah, more guys interestd in EKO`s?

What can I say?: I`ve bought a guitar!!!!

A few years ago I sold my nice midsixties EKO400V in lack of money. (I made the pic with it for the cover of the first Kilaueas album "Aquanautic Inferno" in 2000)

A few weeks ago I discovered that EKO is doing reissues of the old nice 60s models. (And Ive noticed that one guitarist from the italian Wet-Tones was playing such an EKO at the Surfer Joe Festival in 2010)

So now I have got my EKO700 in gold sparkle (of course gold!!!).
Very nice built guitar. Its a bit heavy, but the neck is very good for me (very important!). Sound: With the two humbuckers much too muddy for surf sound... I gave it to my guitar repair man and he splitted them into single coils. Now its okay! Ive got better sounding guitars but the EKO sounds good. My guitar tech man told me that the pickups are nearly identical to good Epiphone pickups. I paid 380 Euros for mine, thats okay! Eyecatcher of the month!

Funny, I was about to post a question re the quality of the MIC Eko reissues. This is the one that caught my eye (Eko Kadett '67 RI):

image

image No offense to Leo, but this is how the Strat should look!

(Actually I was after a lovely vintage Kadett but it got snatched right under my nose Cry )

For once there is a nice brand of cool guitars that are actually cheaper in Europe than in the US, but even here they don't seem so easy to find... Where did you buy yours Ralf?

EDIT: Italia guitars have their own RI version of the Eko triple cutaway model but with a strat configuration, the Italia Monza:

Cool and more than a little surfy guitars. Prices border on cheap as well.

Yes, I agree! The Kadett is also a very nice design! If a Strat would look similar to a Kadett I would have even a Strat. Smile

I bought mine from ccs guitars http://www.ccs-guitars.de/
A dealer here in the south of Germany. Very good contact .It was an out off ebay deal.
He has got even the EKO Kadett. In black... Would also be nice in gold sparkle!? But, hey, the price is okay!

and a EKO Rock VI

He is doing worldwide shipping.

Yes, I know this model! Faaaaaantastic look!!! With the little practice amp! Ive heard that the pickups werent the best unfortunately...
If I find one I will get it! And change pickups then for Jaguar pickups or something else.
Is anyone here who is selling this silver sparkle Italia??? Send me a mail immediately: ralf@kilaueas.de

eek.
if you can play one first, do that. I ordered one and despised it immediately. it had the harshest, most shrill pickups i have ever played. not easy to find good replacements, although I think Novak makes something similar. My biggest gripe was that it came with 1 5-way switch and a bunch of on/offs. (not as pictured) In the demos I watched, shown with 2 5-ways, it looked like you could combine the treble/bass pickups infinitely. The guitar I had was just a strat, with the added, useless option of hearing just the treble OR bass side of those split pickups.
very disappointing.
I sent mine back, asking if they had any in stock with the dual 5-ways, and was told that the design had been changed. Maybe they have improved the switching for the current models....

tiki101:

I have this one in my eBay watch. As depicted it has the 2 5 way sliders. Some of the others on e-bay have a series of on-offs. Not sure which is the current design. In fact the picture shows the 5 way sliders but the description talks about 3 on/off toggles.

SHEESH..is it too much for a seller to know what they hell it is he's hawking?

BTW, I had a very cool Italia Rimini a few years ago. Rickenbacker shaped body, set neck, P-90's, played and sounded great. Wish I'd kept it!

Aw, c'mon. Part of the fun in this is tormenting each other and stoking the other guy's GAS Drool

No one understands the urge to buy new gear like other musicians... GAS is such a weird thing, it's a sickness and a disease.

This is the Eko I'd like to try -

Eko Ghost IV

Might need to swap out the pickups but I love Vox Phantoms.
I used to have a Teisco Phantom copy that was beat to hell. Still wish I hadn't sold it!

This guitar was made by EKO, as were many Vox guitars.
Only produced for one year in 1966 - basically an upside down Mosrite ( the neck is remarkably similar) with an added bit of Italian gaudiness. The pick-ups are the same as found on the Vox Phantom - very Brian Jones-ey.

The Monza seems to be out of production. Sorry, I didn't mean to get your hopes up. Sad There is a red sparkle one on eBay USA right now but the seller won't ship to Europe. I guess the best you can do is keep an eye on eBay listings and hope. Or maybe get another Eko 700 RI and mod/refinish it?

Italia guitars are priced one notch above Eko reissues though...

The Eko Rokes is also being reissued:

I know what you mean... The Kadett is somewhere around #8 on my "must-absolutely-have" GAS list Duh

Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers.

Shock I just found out there's also a hollowbody version of the triple cutaway model, the Eko 295 RI:

Although perhaps not as cool as the original:

Well, I got me EKO Ghost VI from Italy last year (was my long time dream to have a VOX Phantom copy), but wasn't very impressed with the quality - neck is fat (especially in comparison with Mosrite Celebrity I've got at the same time), pickups sound... strange, tremolo is tight and kicks guitar out of tune unless you fix it "one way" with the adjustment screw. Had to replace tremolo spring as well to get it usable. I gave it to my friend to install tele pickup to test it and he found it extremely hard due to guitar construction. Apart of that he discovered that neck shimming for proper angle was done with some construction tape instead of wooden veneer. It was used once live by our rhythm guitar player, very harsh sound, not what I really expected from "vintage replica". Maybe US marketed models are different, but wouldn't expect much based on price (got mine for around $300). Even my cheapo Alden was made better and after some adjustment I got a nice garage sounding guitar from one. Eastwood EKO Rocket reproduction I've got earlier was also way much better, so I wound expect much from modern EKO factory Smile
Just my humble opinion anyway

A question for Ralf or Freddie or anyone who has played a reissue Eko: how does the Eko-logic trem compares to a Bigsby clone? Some Eko models exist with both:
