I prefer 3 guitars and a bass, but we've mostly done 2. Eddie and the Showmen had 3 off and on as well as Dick Dale and, of course, the Astronauts.
Yes, Richard is correct. The back of the "Best of..."LP shows 2 additional guitarists behind Dick.

Yeah, I tried finding that, but I couldn't find a picture(didn't look too hard). I think I remember a second guitarist with Dick recently as well.

How did I miss your post... I must have had this thread open for a long time before reading it, 9 minutes at least judging by the gap in our posts.
I'm still laying in bed, so anything is a possibility as it is a lazy Sunday(no work tomorrow as well, snow on the ground).

It's a nice feeling at least that there's no work tomorrow. We don't have snow on the ground here, but it is a lazy Sunday.
I think 3 guitars gives so much room for more exploration of sounds and I like that. We started out as a 5-piece until the 3rd guitarist started working on his Masters and we've been 2 ever since. I think the 3rd guitar leaves things more interesting and actually allows for 2 lead players to switch off the leads easier than if there were 2. A steady rhythm is very important.

What I love most about the third guitarist is that you really don't have to play all of the time. This really adds to the dynamics and if you dont have an idea that feels right, you dont have to do anything unnatural.

I've never been in a band w/ two guitar players. It's not that I'm not open to the idea. I've never really written for two guitar players you know? I'd love to be or have a utility guitar player that's also handling Keyboard/Organ sounds/ noise fx or Sax...a sexy Sax man! Or woman..whatever.

It'd be terrible! A band with 26 musicians playing guitar might be interesting though!

Didn't Les Paul already do this with his sound-on-sound recording, by recording twenty-six passes, over which he played live? Sounds great!

I just played a show where 23 guitarists, 3 bassists and drummer played Urban Surf Kings song Giant Cow. It was with my Grade 10 guitar class. Big sound, and pretty cool.

Three bassists is way overkill... 23 guitarists is awesome though! Congrats!

We have two right now, but I'd love to invite in another. Lots of trad surf songs have one guy playing lead, another guy strumming chords and a third guy playing in unison with the bass.
Ideally, it'd be great to have a guy who can swing from 3rd guitar to keys, sax, harmonica, melodica, additional percussion, etc. I know just the guy, but I have to cure him of his stage fright first.

I think that The Astronauts had 3 guitars. One lead, one chords, one muted single notes with cranked spring reverb just for the drippy splashes.

I think the Astronauts were pretty much "spot on" w/3 guitars...& I'll always remember 1st hearing "Baja" for the rest of my life ! (On RCA no less, in mono on Aunt Helen's gigundo Magnavox...WOW !). The pics on the back cover of the LP reveal all. The Trashmen explain in their "box set booklet" that the sound of their band was dictated by the fact "they used Jaguar's & had reverb tanks". (We know Tele's & stuff appeared later)...but this is "early Trashmen Surf Instro's"...plus "A-Bone" (of course). I say 3. 1/Lead, 2/Rhythm, 3/Drip & Mute. (You CAN have 23 guitars BUT make sure EVERYONE has an "outboard reverb tank !!!).

Currently we have two guitars, bass, drums and a sax player. He usually plays tenor, sometimes alto. I love the ingredient it adds. He can also play guitar, bass, upright bass and drums. Do many of you have saxophone in your bands?

I don't have a count but off the top of my head it seems like keys are way more prevalent than horns as far as 5th member non-guitar instruments go in today's bands, though there are some notables using horns.
