My parents just returned from Turkey and brought me back a Saz. It looks a lot like what Ahmet is playing in the video. Anyone here have any insights in to the differences between an oud and a saz? ...and where some good instructional sites are? |

That is another great vid. He also was not cheating on the song, he played it note for note. Sax player sounded smooth, drummer kicks. Maybe if Ahmet visits SoCal we will loan him a reverb tank. Real enjoyable vid. |

Great Version of Surf Rider! Miserlou came from over there, cool to see them playin' one of ours. Did you see the other video that was in that same area? Some dude in Germany came upon my web page while researching "Surf Rider", and send me an mp3 of this a year or so ago. He told me it was played on a saz. —My Web Site - Tunes - Pictures - Guitar Projects - Hard Rock Cafe Guitar Pins |

Not quite, Dave, you'd be thumping a whole lot more strings. See below.
This is a variety of saz called the "long-neck". Most saz's are 4, 5 or 6 string affairs, and have a neck/headstock angle similar to Gibson. The oud (or 'ud') has 12 strings, and the neck angle is nearly 90 degrees! For more info, visit the About pages, or the WIKI pages, or plug the terms into Google - there are far too many sites out there for me to think that I'm qualified to name one or two as being a good place to start! unlunf —MY RIGHT HAND IS FASTER THAN YOURS! |
