I was truly fascinated (hey, who said 'obsessed'??? ) with this song through all of 2010, and listened to it over and over again, studying it in minute detail. I wanted to capture some of its qualities for the new Madeira material (and there's one song on the upcoming album that comes somewhat close, I think), particularly its incredibly deep groove. It's got such a weird arrangement, too. I get goose-bumps almost every time I hear the band drop out towards the end and the bass is the only thing that keeps playing. Then when the band blasts back in, and just keeps repeating that descending riff, until the last time through, at which point the bass plays three notes that sound as though by all logic SHOULD NOT work there - and yet they absolutely do! I also noticed something very interesting - if you listen VERY closely at the beginning, you can hear the drummer doubling his original part! Around the 0:08 mark (if I remember correctly), you can hear another drum set enter, playing exactly the same thing as the first. I'm sure others have done that elsewhere, but I don't know of any other example of such a thing being done. It really gives the song a massive drum sound. In the end I think I learned a lot from this track (and ripped off several things - thanks Fifty Foot Combo! The check is in the mail... umm, yes, absolutely, trust me....), but given that they have all that percussion, the organ, and even the distorted wah guitar, I decided I don't want to go quite as far as they do.
