thanks very much for posting this Dave. Always wanted to know how you played this and so did Matt I believe. A pure genius at work. Nice video with the iphone.

Always have loved the beautiful vibe of this song. Thanks for making & sharing the tutorial, Dave!

This is great, thank you Dave for making our brains (and finger callouses) grow bigger!
Playing Slacktone songs is so rewarding. You feel like you've just wrestled Andre The Giant, and even if you didn't win by knockout, you still held through. I mean, who can nail those songs and say he's not a better player because of it? It's like the ultimate practice: fun, hard on so many levels, and supremely educative.

Access to the living legends.Dont you just love this genre?

Any chance of posting your tank settings for us humble stay at home players? I know it wont compute exactly but it would save endless twiddling and still wondering if it could be better.

Incedentely, what actually is that amp? Ive seen it in some vids on youtube.

Cheers

Hi Nigel, the reverb tank is my black 1965, set, dwell: 4.5, Mix: 4, Tone: 10. This reverb unit is a bit darker sounding than my others, but still sound really good. It lets through more of the fundamental guitar frequencies. Even so, I set all of my reverb units like this. Sometimes the Dwell on 4, depending on how much gain the tube has. when I set the Tone on 10, I can keep the other two knobs down lower, giving more fundamentals and attack, and a stronger signal out to the amp.

The amps you see there are a 1962 Bassman head sitting on top of my Slacktone Amp. The Slacktone Amp is a custom made amp that a friend made for me. I'm not playing through those for the video. I'm going direct using preamp made by the guy who designed the Slacktone Amp. It's the same exact preamp, but instead of tubes it uses some special kind of FET. It's very small, and runs on batteries. The signal chain is: Guitar >EP-PRE >PreAmp >Direct Box >Ampex tube preamp >Apogee Ensemble >Logic Pro using an impulse response of a 1965 Super Reverb Amp >EQ curves I made using Metric Halo Channel Strip. Maybe more than you wanted to know!
Video done with iphone 4s.

here's a link to a sloppy video I made showing the basic recording setup. I may not leave this very long: http://youtu.be/8_z-fDuD5d0

All the nice things that you, others have said in response to this video kind of blow me away... Thanks! I was a little bit concerned that I was doing the right thing posting this primitive video! I've also realized that I've left out an entire section to the song! ☀dave

Not more than he/we were keen to know - but more than most would share anywhere else, and with a video to boot. This is what makes SG101 so darn cool.

What a treat. I've been working on that song for about 8 years and I'm surprised to see that I'm pretty close most of the time, now I can get even closer. I noticed the missing section because it is one of my favorite parts of the song and I was hoping to see the position, even though I've seen Dave play it more than a dozen times the slower tempo helps a lot.

Very cool Dave, thanks for sharing what you do with us.

Hi Dave. Thanks for sharing the tank settings. I just would never have even tried that configuration.
BTW, you sound humbled. when your the E Clapton of the Surf Guitar world all you'll ever get is respect!!
Thanks again for the info.
Cheers

Dave, your right. I noticed you left out the part after the secord verse. Thanks for what you provided anyways, it really helped out.

Hi Dave! Are you using the EP-PRE live?

Yes, Bob, I've been using the EP-Pre for over a year now for gigs. It's become a habit... not sure if it's the best thing for my surf sound, but, I have to say, it helps the guitar stand out in the band mix. It's fantastic for rock stuff using distortion, but, for surf, i'm careful about any thing that affects the treble sound. I Velcro it to the top of the amp so it's the last thing, and has a very short cord to the input. The EP-Pre has a high impedance output, so,I use a short cord. It also flips the guitar signal 180∘ out of phase. That's something to be aware of when using two amps. When I use two amps, only one amp gets the EP-Pre.

Very very cool Dave. Thanks for sharing the song and the set up for recording.
