Sure Dick Dale invented surf music, including the exotic influences. But he's all about the guitar, this song highlights the real power in surf - the drums. Talk about drama, this song is the definition of playing with dramatics. I can hear this song over and over and never tire of it.

Good call, Danny. Sandy Nelson and Richie Podolor really nailed it with "Casbah"! That's as great a surf song/performance as I've ever heard. It would certainly be a contender for the top of my list. I never tire of it.

I love those busy drums so much! The natural compression, the mono, the drive! Wonderful sounds.

Outer Wave does a really good version of Casbah in their live shows.
They played at Don's NYE til 1 am. The place was jumpin all night long.

+1 in the fanboy camp for Casbah/Sandy & Co., and great point about the drums Danny. I think I am going to watch Pounding Surf! (again) today.

What LP was it on, or was it released just as a single?
What's the origin of the tune?
Besides the awesomeness of the drums, what guitar/amp was used here in your opinion? I just love this kind of crunch. Is it mostly the mic/preamp+tape distorting?
Sorry for getting so technical...

I went to look for my Sandy Nelson albums and can't find them. I moved back in 2007 and my albums got all jumbled up. I can't remember if I have an album with this on it or if it was on another comp. I'll do some searching through the mounds of records...ugh.

Started going through my records. Found 2 Sandy Nelson albums, but not the one I'm thinking of. Also found all kinds of neato stuff I haven't seen or heard in years. Greatest find so far: Love's Da Coda. MMM MM good.

A while back I was looking at my Richie Allen (Podolor) records to try to find Casbah, only to realize that it was released under Sandy Nelson's name. I've got it on the this great Ace (UK) compilation:

I need to pick up some Sandy Nelson's stuff. I never got any of his records (other than on compilations).

I'm ordering Toes on the Nose immediately along with Birth of Surf 2. Thanks for the tip. And by the way, IMO the drummer takes Casbah to another level, just like on As the Dark Wave Swells and anything by The Deadbeats.

Toes on the Nose is indeed a phenomenal comp, one of the best ever of '60s surf music! A must-have for any true surf music fan, I'd say.
And Casbah is truly an incredible track! Funny that it's been covered by such a variety of bands, from the most trad to most prog (the Mermen). I guess it says something about the track.
I've always wondered if there was anything else like it, another collaboration between Podolor and Nelson that sounds anywhere close to this. It seems odd that it would be a complete one-off, but so far it seems to be.
Anyway, love those drums! And Podolor is always fantastic, but especially so on this one. Just brilliant.
