Bear with me . . .
Doing a search on Zal Yanovsky of the Lovin' Spoonful. He has been cited as a influence by Peter Buck (REM) and most surprising to me recently--Eric Clapton(!). They sure look like a surf band, though--don't you think? Lose the autoharp or give it some reverb, put a Jaguar in Zal's hand? O.K. (I'll admit I had time on my hands this morning.)

But Google can take you down some rabbit holes---this band, "The Surf Suns" came up with the search words "Lovin' Spoonful" and "Surf"....because, well....The Surf Suns once opened for them.

I'm sort of fascinated by a band with a surf name and dress code starting up in Indiana as late as 1966.

Here is a page with a concise bit of info including both sides of the one 45 they recorded.

It's strange, they really don't sound like a surf band here, although "Still in Love with you Baby" (credited here to the Beau Brummels) has some BB/Jan and Dean treatment in the chorus.

"When surfing went out of style, (gee, ya think?) the Surf Suns changed the band name to Boston Creme Pie, traded the striped shirts for nehru jackets, then scarves & bellbottoms . . . "

ah well . . . .

(Oh yeah, the "Lovin' Spoonful Surf Band")
